Veterans Health Care System: A Case Study
To cover the deficit on the waitlist, for each general practitioner added an additional 20-25 patients could be seen per day. Meaning in two weeks an additional 200-250 patients could be seen. Adding just one or two additional general practitioners and the utilization of residents would curb the waitlist to that of less than 500. The cost would be around $650,000 to $900,000 a year for salaries depending on the amount of residents added, these number are including two physicians and anywhere from 5 to 10 residents, on top of what currently exists. Currently, the veterans’ health care system is utilizing pharmacy residents, but not physician residents. In 2012, there were many reports that veterans are experiencing long extended wait times for medical services. There were allegations that veterans have died while waiting to be seen by physicians. As a result of these reports, Congress directed an audit to be conducted on the Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
