The role performed by the police in our community is generally to enforce the law. The police primarily enforce criminal law in which the laws are made to protect the rights of the community and individuals. Not only do the police enforce law, they also act as a deterrent to prevent crime and help to preserve peace. In addition, the police are an important part of emergency services where they are often responsible providing further assistance. Overall, their key duties are to protect life and property, preserve peace, prevent offences, detect and apprehend offenders and help those in need of assistance.

The FSD is able to assist in investigations by using DNA, fingerprint, etc to eliminate or incriminate suspects. The areas provided by the FSD include: audio and visual, ballistics, biological examination, botany, victim and criminal, identification, tracing and analysis of chemicals, DNA management, document examination, fingerprints, fire and explosion investigation, microscopy and vehicle examination.

a. Since horses have been used since the Military Mounted Police rode into the Victorian colony in 1836. When the Victorian police was established, it brought together many mounted units throughout Victoria to become united in the Mounted Branch.
Police officers that apply for the mounted branch, must have completed at least two years of service and must be able to ride a horse. The training of police riders and horses are conducted on a weekly basis and are required to maintain a high level of fitness. In addition, the members are formally reassessed annually. Any colour horses are accepted however the horses need to be tall – at least 16.1 hands tall. Horses also need to be Warmblood type horses, Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds and Clydesdale cross breeds and 5-12 years old. To become a police officer, you must submit an application online including personal details, employment and education history and any prior offences. If you are accepted, then you are able to take an entrance exam that has a fee of $160 which covers verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning assessments, multiple choice English skills test, summary, extended writing, oral communications and computer skills assessments. No education or pre-requisite subjects are required unless you are under the age of 21 in which you must have complete VCE or VCAL. Other entry requirements include an Australian citizenship, maintain a healthy level of cardio fitness and strength, a driver’s licence, Level 1 First Aid Certificate with CPR, having a healthy body, “competent” communication skills and not being associated with a person or organisation being suspected in or previously in unlawful activity. Failure to pass any of these requirements, immediately terminates the
