This documentary focused on understanding the criminal mind and what efforts go into deciding the fate of a criminal while making sure that we are still protected in our communities upon their release. There were several cases presented; Case 1 The Naked Samurai Swordsman, Case 2 The London Nail Bomber, Case 3 The Yorkshire Ripper, Case 4 the Ipswich Rapist, and Case 5 George serial pedophile. We learned about the cases and watched how the system assesses, evaluates, and the thought process behind what it takes to determine a criminal’s state of mind. A lot of research from forensic and clinical psychologists, testing assessments, and jury input is taken into account for each case to make a fair recommendation for offenders so that they are placed in prison for being bad or placed in a hospital for bing mad. Parole also plays a vital role in whether the offender should be released once finished with their sentence and what type of risk do they impose on society. The treatment of offenders after release is mentioned and agreed that it should continue for a time during and after parole. (Gideon & Sung, pg. 41) The video also talks about the importance of extended supervision sometimes for five years and sometimes for 10 years when it comes to sexual offenders and needing different treatment programs and accommodations. We learned both in our book and the video that treatment is recommended and used during the analysis at the onset of the crime and court all the way to what is needed during the parole period of each case.
