Visual Analysis: At 12, By Sally Mann
This image is from Mann’s “At Twelve” portraits of young woman collection. The girl just slightly tilted to the left of the center of the frame is standing on a old bridge with missing boards over a flowing river. There is a small house in the background and trees surrounding the house. The girls is leaning against the bridge very casually and seems to be completely relaxed and unconcerned with the dangers of falling. This trying of fearlessness is common in adolescence. The lighting is what really draws the viewer in to this image. The beams of light appear to be reaching for her saturating her with constant sunlight. The perfect combination of humidity and Sothern Virginia the rays peeking through the clouds gives this image an angelic quality. Almost as though the girl is being …show more content…
It is a timeless image of a young girl playing dress up in a young woman’s dress. She is standing in the center of the frame on what appears to be a large patio after what appears to have been a thunderstorm or a summer rain. With her right hand she holds the back of the dress in place so it stays around her tiny waist. Looking down at the dress as she spreads the dress out and around to her left with her left hand in a twirling motion. The movement can be seen by the blurred effects created by the perfect choice of shutter speed. Its just enough to slow the movement of the dress but not so much that it comprises the clarity of the rest of the subject. Certain parts of the image appear to be slightly over exposed with an abundance of light reflecting off the background and illuminating the white areas of the dress. This makes the subject really stand out. The contrast of the black lacey material against the white translucent materials also is very appealing to the eye. The image seems to give you a glimpse back in time to the memory or a dream which reminds you of innocence, imagination, and carefree world of a young

The material of the dresses is particularly specific to the underlying storyline of Joan of Arc, as it is a metallic and shiny stretchy silver fabric. This infers the idea of the dresses symbolising armour, which is relevant to the battles that Joan of Arc had to fight. The masculine armour like fabric then contrasts against the feminine style of dress, again backing up the important theme of Joan of Arc throughout the piece. The shiny material also shimmers in the light and emphasises movements and enhances angles that the dancers perform, whether they are big or small moves which then makes developing motifs clearer to see.…

What struck me when I first saw this painting, other than the pretty flower garland, is how brightly illuminated she was. Her porcelain skin is highlighted as if the sun or some form of light shines down on her. This is in contrast to everything else being much darker. The contrast between her bright aura and the dark surroundings could the author’s way of symbolizing Madame de Thorigny’s status and wealth. It could also be a way of emphasizing her being the focal point of the painting. I noticed her gaze…

The camera captures images of buildings that look well-kept which tells the viewer people care about the place they live. There are not many people in the opening scene, and there is much greenery suggesting it may be a small rural town. The lighting appears to be natural lighting leaving the feeling of normalcy. It looks appears it was shot on an overcast day as no sun is seen. Once the magical music starts, it seems as if the lighting gets brighter signifying something special is going to happen. The music is similar to something you would hear from a Disney film, and it immediately evokes a happy feeling. This translates that something special is going to happen in this ordinary place. The costumes in this scene show individuals dressed in conservative, smart, and clean attire. The men are wearing suits and women a bit more casual but remain smartly dressed. Forrest sporting a high and tight haircut. There are several props in this scene the feather, the suitcase and the box of chocolates to name a few. The feather gliding through the air signifies the easy going and carefree nature of the film. The fact that it lands on Forrest’s shoe implies fate and destiny as this could have landed anywhere. As Forest places the…

This multiple exposure includes her image taken at Washington Square Arch with water fountain and at some streets in London. It is contrastive in colors because the top part is darker and contrasts to the light-shiny bottom part. The display of many grey-toned colors instills a sense of depression; however the bottom half showing the cheerful crowd so colourful, creating a joyful mood. It can be tricky to deduce how many images she used to create this multiple exposure effect. By a glance, it looks like she used three images; in fact, she only used two images!…

Also note the set description including the encroaching greenery - perhaps symbolic of the reality that is also intruding on their illusion. The butterflies and birds and other decorations all contribute to the illusion, and are part of what destroys the ideal of the lay-off season for Olive.…

There seems to be a continuum of intelligence testing that goes on the one extreme of the Stanford-Binet intelligence test (IQ) to the information processing theories to Sternberg’s triarchic theory of intelligence and ending with Gardner’s multiple intelligences (Bee & Boyd, 2010). The standard IQ test only measures the intellectual and academic dimensions of intelligence and Gardner’s multiple intelligences proposes eight separate domains of intelligence, each with their strategies for measurement. On this continuum the teacher went so far as to employ the precepts of Sternberg’s triatric theory of intelligence, but not so far as to try and cover Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. I observed the class on a Friday, so it was test day. There was a comprehension test and a spelling test. Both tests specifically gauge intellectual ability to the absence of any type of measure about practical or creative intelligence. However, after the tests the students were asked to color, cut out, and paste a large caterpillar to their folders (creative), and then the teacher had a story time where the class talked about the dangers of lightning (practical). As per Gardner’s multiple intelligences, the naturalistic and intrapersonal aspects of intelligence were those that were addressed the least in the class I observed. The class is almost entirely indoors—only having outside time at the playground—so there is no time to develop the ability to recognize patterns in nature. I think the teacher tries to compensate by covering activities that invoice nature themes, such as the lightning worksheet, but there is only so much of nature that can be studied in the air conditioning, under fluorescent lights. Also, there was very little development of intrapersonal intelligence. The teacher mostly relied on consequences as a means to control behavior, rarely trying to develop the personal strengths and goals of the students. I think that the…

This is one of Criss’s most popular works. When union membership was mostly white and mostly male, Criss chose an African American female worker as his subject and gave her a name. Black women didn’t have near the same opportunities as white men, but some were skilled at craft work such as making clothes. The dressmaker in her starched white apron is surrounded by gathers and folds of fabric. The edges of the shapes in this painting are crisp as are a lot of his works, and the colors are mostly flat with the barest amount of shading needed to suggest depth, revealing the painter 's admiration for the overlapping planes of Cubist paintings. (Cole,…

In this view, there is no resemblance of an anatomical nude, but only abstract lines and planes. Dark outlines bound the contours of the body of the woman while serving as motion lines that emphasize the dynamics of the moving figure, while the accented arcs of the dotted lines seem to suggest a thrusting pelvic motion. The lines suggest her consecutive static positions and create a rhythmic pattern. Decorative elements, such as painting geometric shapes, can highlight color depth and increase light reflection to create a radiant glow. Duchamp used repeated overlapping geometric shapes to create the silhouette of the woman. Each after-image of the woman runs into the next. Discerning one position from the next becomes nearly impossible for the viewer. However, this deconstructs the form and helps to construct the movement in space, producing a kind of elasticity of the image. The space consists of a foreground, mid-ground and background. As the woman descends down the staircase, one can notice the slow mechanical movements frozen in time. In the background, there is a slight drawing of her figure, so one could tell that she was there. In the mid-ground, one could make out her figure a little more, knowing that she was farther down the staircase, but not there in that exact moment. The foreground is where the woman is more in focus and one could see more detail in her body movements. The fluidity of this piece adds to aestheticism in a sense that one has to understand temporality to see this figure of a nude woman walking through time. The movement also seems to be rotated counterclockwise from the upper left to the lower right corner. This is where the gradient of the apparently temporal sequence corresponding to the bottom right to top left, dark colors begin to fade, which shows intention to simulate the present…

The first stanza conveys Duffy’s thoughts when she finds a photograph of her mother, ten years before Duffy was born. I begins by setting a image of her mother enjoying herself with her two friends. In which they ‘bend from the waist’ and ‘shriek at the pavement’. This shows a lively, carefree exiting atmosphere that supports the views on the life of a teenager. She also uses two iconic pictures to describe her mother. One of which is of Marilyn Monroe, in the 1950s which is meant to portray glamour. This is expressed when it says ‘Your polka-dot dress blows round your legs. Marilyn’, describing the picture, and showing that Duffy thinks her mother was glamorous at the time, when she was younger.…

For this assignment I observed four children, all of which have been given names of anonymity in order to protect the participants. The children I observed were Molly, age 5, Bailey, age 7, Floyd, age 9, and Ann, age 12. I observed the children for a total of one hour in their home. The observation occurred on March 15th,2017, this started at approximately 2:00 PM ending at 3:00 PM. The main focuses of my observation tool place in their living room as well as their play room. Most of the time their mom was in the room with us, but during the times when she was absent, the children’s oldest sister, age 16, was in the room as well.…

When a dress has a lot of material it is hard to keep it still. Some dresses like ball gowns are made to be firm and to not let the figure move freely, when viewing this work the figure is relaxed and could dance without difficulty in this dress making it not only for elegance, but for movement and rhythm. In Rembrandt’s ‘Night Watch’ one can see the many figures ready for battle. The viewer can see a step-by-step process of firing a weapon by loading a musket, firing, and blowing away the excess powder. One can also view the two main men in the front have given the orders and placement of all the militia’s feet are in the process of moving out and getting ready to fight. There is no fighting in this scene, but one can understand they are not looking at people posing, but instead the anticipation of action about to occur. From this the viewer can understand this as movement in the artwork. In Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ the viewer is able to see Venus in a standstill, but everything around her is in a moving state. One is able to view Venus being greeted by the Wind God cloaked by Thora on the left and the Chlorus on the…
