Good Breeze by Arthur Dove Good Breeze (1931) is a work of art created by Arthur Dove. Dove lived on a boat for seven years; inspired by the organic shape of the ocean by which his work is derived and this brings a fluent, yet abstract element to the piece. The art represents a boat coming out of a dim background crashing through the tides. The three most outstanding visual elements in this work of art are: color, light, and lines.
In terms of visual elements, it’s clearly stated that color is the strongest one. He used a primary color palette, making his artwork so bright and eye-catching. A shiny yellow boat is sailing through a dark deep blue
ocean bringing a mystics scene to the canvas. The variety and color mixture can be identified easily and there’s a blue-green touch on the ocean where it gradually becomes a deep gray. A green background; representing nature and the marks of red, and orange bring vividness, and appeal to the work. The complementary harmony is exquisite, the colors react to one another beautifully.
Lights and shadows are created in the piece to bring out those specific colors. Dove brought light to his work, blending his palette with white tones creating energy and electricity. He also created shadows, bringing darkness and a sense of the unknown to the creation. The different values create an amazing juxtaposition between light and dark. The chiaroscuro technique brings force to the artwork creating contrast between the shades he applied.
Lines; organic three-dimensional form. There’s a fluent and natural outline creating movement and visual fluidity lines created to please the eye. The lines he created are so overflowing and fluid that they are easily connected. Lines that also show a boat on some risky tides, that will eventually turn into peaceful waters. Eye-direction is dispersed in many ways, making it hard to follow a pattern on how the art should be seen even though the boat is the main focal point of the piece.
