Voice From The Field Summary
In this “Voice from the Field”, three steps are listed to help build preschoolers math skills. Froebel was the man that introduced blocks to the preschool ages. He called them gifts. He stated that using these gifts would help children develop. The book talked about using a variety of instructional approaches. It also talked about letting children use different styles of blocks to explore. The last step that it mentioned said to ask the children a variety of questions. Giving children adequate time to use the blocks is very beneficial to them. It provides them with opportunities to try different methods with the blocks. These may be stacking or lining up the blocks. Doing this helps children grasp the ideas of patterns and spatial relationships.

To promote cognitive development, I will provide activities and materials to develop children's curiosity, problem solving and reasoning skills. I will provide a time in our daily schedule for exploring our manipulative cabinet where there are puzzles, magnets, gears, colored counting cubes and blocks. When reading stories I will ask open-ended questions and allow time for discussion. During circle time we will sing many fun songs about the letters of the alphabet and days of the week. Every other week we go to the library and have the librarian read to us. For the child with special needs I will have pencil holders and give extra time to complete their projects.…

“Public speech is the most valuable skill you can learn.” That’s the line that seems to start every awards ceremony spiel, every college essay, every application for speech captainship...oh hey, look. But despite the popularity of this idea, I feel there is a distinction to be made between the value of public speaking, and the value of being on the Neuqua Valley Speech Team. Over two years, I’ve learned that being a part of this team is more than just learning how to act, write, or prep a broadcast – it’s about learning how to connect with people, both in rounds and in real life. It is about responsibility and commitment to something greater than yourself. It is about striving to bring out the best in people. It is about discovering who you are through teamwork and collaboration, and I want next year’s novices to understand that. As a captain, I know that I can go beyond simply carrying out tasks and…
