at the age of 65.
After his birth, the Disney family moved to Marceline Missouri, where Walt spent most of his childhood.
Growing up as one of five children, four boys and a girl, Disney always had a passion for art. For instance, since there was little money to go around, Walt would often sell drawings to his neighbors. Additionally, after relocating to Kansas City in 1911, Disney developed a love for trains, which can be conveyed through his art. Not long after, Walt pursued his career at McKinley High School back in Chicago where he studied art as well as photography, and was even a cartoonist for the school paper. In addition, Walt attended evening courses at the Chicago Art Institute. Yet during the fall of 1918, at only 16 years of age, Walt dropped out of school and attempted to join the army. However, after being rejected due to young age, he instead became part of the Red Cross overseas in France. The significance of this was not the event itself, but rather the vehicle he drove. To elaborate, instead of stock camouflage, Walt’s ambulance was covered from stem to stern in Disney cartoons. Once he returned from France in 1919, Walt moved back to Kansas City as a newspaper artist at the Pesmen-Rubin Commercial Art Studio. From there Walt and Ub Iwerks form Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists, which fails after a month. Following, both get jobs with the Kansas City Slide Company, where they discover animations. During that time, Walt created a company called Laugh-O-Grams, which eventually
fell bankrupt. Rather than giving up though, he and his brother, Roy, advanced to Hollywood where Walt dreamed of becoming a director. After his “Alice Comedies” success Walt married one of his first employees, Lillian Bounds, on July 13, 1925 in Lewiston Idaho, later being blessed with two daughters. Furthermore, the success only continued. To illustrate, Walt and Roy renamed their studio, ‘Walt Disney Studios,’ and the rest is history.
