Walter Mischel Theory
Do you think you have what it takes to be successful in life? According to Walter Mischel, kids who have willpower will have a higher rate of being successful in life. To be able to prove his theory, Mischel came up with an experiment call “The Marshmallow Experiment”. Due to his Mischel’s experiment, scientists have come to the conclusion that kids, or adults, who have willpower will be more likely to be more successful in life because they will be more patient and self-control than those who do not possess the two abilities. Mischel believe the more patient can also lead to kids being able to pay more attention in class. By doing the marshmallow experiment, not only will it show if the kids have any willpower, but can also show their personality and the environment at home. Patient and self control are some of the keys to success. Those who have patient are willing to wait and work hard. Scientists were convinced that the difference between a child who wait thirty seconds and a child who have the ability to wait fifteen minutes was that the high delayer had an SAT score that was, on average, 210 higher than kid who could not wait. Mischel once stated, “self-control explains more of the individual variation in success than IQ scores” (source 1). Although the vast majorities of the kids try to come up with strategies to help extend their …show more content…

In chapter 5, Duhigg described a well-known experiment that was performed by scientists at Stanford that tested the willpower of a group of four-year-old children. The children were offered a deal. They could eat a marshmallow right away or they could have two marshmallows if they put off eating the marshmallow a few minutes after the researcher left the room. Certain kids managed to disregard the marshmallow, while some gave in and ate it as soon as the researcher left. Years later, the scientists pursued many of the marshmallow study’s participants. The participants were already in high school and they were asked about their grades, ability to sustain friendships, and their capability to deal with problems. It turns out that the four-year-olds…

How might that impact your ability to be persistent? How is the ability to delay gratification related to maturity. How is it related to self-control? How is it related to self- control? How is persistence different from self-control? I am very good at delaying gratification, because of my military training to be “Companionably Dis-Passionate.” I really think that this question is irreverent to me. I also think it has nothing to do with matuarity, because I know a lot of 40 year old people that act like they are 12. Self-control is a learned inherent traits, that is taught though discipline and self-pride and…

In the research done by Susan Black “The Search for True Grit” it states, “A quarter century later, psychologists and researchers have refined and redefined several related concepts and constructs, including self-control, self-discipline, self-management, and self-regulation. The terms vary, but researchers agree that these traits are essential for school success” (Black 52). This does not only apply to success in school, but also success in the real world. My mother had me at the age of twenty three and disciplined herself to finish her last year of college to become a teacher. Her road to becoming a teacher was not smooth, but because of her self-discipline she managed to finish college and received her bachelors in English, and go on to receive her certification in teaching. Having four children is not easy, but my mother has disciplined herself to keep up with our extremely busy lives. I take part in various organizations such as band, UIL, student council, and National Honor Society, therefore I am required to follow all of the set rules given to me. The set rules given to me are my responsibility to follow, which means I must have self-discipline. For example, meetings for most of the organizations I am involved in are at seven thirty in the morning, therefore I must go to bed early and wake up early to be able to be on time for the meetings. I am currently the drum major of my school’s…

Astronomer William Herschel was the one that discovered the planet Uranus. His motivation that led to such an amazing discovery is far from what you would think. Herschel actually was fascinated with the power of the eye, calling it the bodies most powerful organ. It was this that gave him the motivation that he needed to be able to stare into a telescope for hours on end mapping stars. He wasn’t alone though. He was surrounded by many other astronomers working toward dividing large groups of stars into “species” in order to gain an understanding of their structure. It was during this process that Herschel ended up discovering the planet…

Those with growth mindsets believe that “...difficulty only indicates that their present skills and approach are not yet sufficiently developed for the task at hand…” (Dweck, 1). *When skills aren’t developed enough, these people work at them until they are developed and the task can be completed. Effort is put into every task until it is done sufficiently and exceeds expectations. To those with growth mindsets, “‘What was important was the motivation...students were energized by the idea that they could have an impact on their mind...’” (Trei, 2). *By believing that a person is capable of changing and having an influence on their mind, those with growth mindsets put effort into everything they do. These people never give up and will work as hard as they can until they know that they are doing well. The growth mentality also can influence people to “...keep growing beyond whatever it is we’ve accomplished today…” (Hochheiser, 1). *By developing and going beyond what a person has done today, they put in more effort and work until the person believes that they can be successful. In the story Flowers for Algernon, Charlie Gordon, a person many believed was not intelligent, worked and worked until he started to improve upon his reading and writing skills. *He was persistent and would not give up or put less than one hundred percent effort into his work. His skills began to improve as he worked harder. A growth mentality and believing that someone is intelligent affects success because it motivates a person to put all the effort they can into a…

Having the right mindset can make a big difference in person’s life because it can either inspire the individual to keep going or give up completely. In her book, “Mindest: The New Psychology of Success”, Carol S. Dweck argues that growth mindsets are individuals who love challenges and are not afraid of failures, they believe in their learned abilities over talents. On the other hand, fixed mindset people focus on the results only. One person can alternate from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset with the correct social influences and good mentoring from others.…

I learned that William Herschel was not originally an astronomer by trade. He was actually an Organist in the city of Bath. After he had discovered Uranus, he sought to find how planets and stars were made rather than tracking the orbits of comets and planets. I find this significant because Herschel sought information that was different than what other astronomers were studying at the time.…

In “How to Boost Your Willpower” by Tara Parker-Pope, talks about willpower as an assortment of feasible tips and latest studies of willpower. First, she discusses the temptation we face in everyday life. Willpower and self-control helps us abstain from desire. “Self-control is a limited resource that may be strengthened by food, laughter, powerful memories and through practice.” Learning self-control is a meaningful to certain reactions. This helps us with complications we face in life. “Dr. Baumeiter” analysis shows a connection among self-control and glucose levels. While restraining a feeling can exhaust self-control, Willpower can be restored by raising blood sugar. To help raise blood sugar should be done with sugar sweetened drinks instead…

Carol Dweck, the author of the article of “Brainology”, states that, “those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward (and correct) idea of effort –the idea that the harder you work the more your ability will grow and that even geniuses have had to work hard for their accomplishments” (Dweck 2). In this example, Dweck argues that people with a growth mindset will strive to achieve their full potential no matter how hard it gets. I figured I have a growth mindset when I was making a science project. I wasn’t that good at creating models, especially one that models the universe. At first I was going to create a poster and plaster it with information I Googled, but I thought about it... Only lazy, less creative people do posters. So why not make a 3D model? I put in more effort than I normally do, gathering materials that I have never used other than just a cardboard poster and colored paper. By turning in this science project, I knew that I could keep building up my skills and also had positive thoughts about my project. Dweck also brings up that, “as a growth mindset individual, you see effort as necessary to grow and master useful skills and knowledge… You are not turned away by fears that you might make an attempt, or even work hard, and that failure is possible” (Dweck…

In 1781, a man named William Herschel got his telescope and went out to look at the stars. He was trying to “isolate as many double stars as he could discover, and to use these doubles as a tool to measure stellar parallax.” (Uranus and the Establishment of Herschel’s Astronomy, Schaffer, S., 1981). While doing so, he found something that he knew wasn’t a star. At first, he thought it was a Comet. He reported his discovery to a few other scientists, and all together, they continued to discuss it. They decided that it was either a comet or a planet. A few questions about the size and position of the “comet” confused them. “Comets dominated the contemporary perception of the heavens: it seemed inconceivable that a new planet could be discovered.”…
