There was once a young man who lived a free life of a rover. He traveled all around Australia and he lived free until 1915 when he was called up for the WW1.
He and the other young soldiers left their home to sail to Gallipoli, a peninsula in Turkey. All the peoples came to the quay to bid farewell to the young and healthy boys that were going to fight for their country. When they arrived to what they called Suvla bay, the Turks where already there and had advantage. They Turks shoot the young and unaware soldiers.
In the war there were “breaks” when both parts could bury the dead soldiers. After this break the war started all over again.
The young man did his best to survive while his fellow soldiers died beside him in the trench. Then he got hit by a shell and that was the end to his life as a soldier. He lost both his legs and wished he was dead instead.
This was the end to his life as a soldier but the end to his life as a rover as well. He could no more go Waltzing Matilda around Australia. He was maimed and was therefore shipped back to Australia. When they arrived nobody cheered at them or welcomed them. The people did not know what do or what to say so they just stood and stared at them.
The years went and the young man grew to an old man. Every April his war comrades marched while he sat in his porch and watched them. But as every year passed by the numbers of them got fewer and some day there will be no men marching at all.
