During the 1860s and 70s, US settlers killed as many as 30 Nez Perce, though many never stood trial. The US was not justified in their actions leading up to and during the Nez Perce War. To start off, the Nez Perce were left with little of their homelands. Also, the Nez Perce’s homeland held significant importance for them, as the land was where ancestors were buried and religious ceremonies performed. In addition, the Nez Perce did not want violence. The war was greatly encouraged by the US’ actions.
