Watching American Movies: The Effects Of Learning A Second Language
As technology has continuously been developing day by day, most people have access to watch media, whether it is on television, smartphones, or other electronic devices. Due to this easy access, people have received aid from the media when learning new languages; people have been steadily utilizing this method of watching movies or television series in order to acquire a second language. Every person differs in his or her own method and strategies for learning a new language; however, there are a great number of learners who have had positive results using this method.
Almost all of these cases were related to young children before or in their critical period to acquire a language. Therefore, there are people who claim that watching American movies actually facilitates Second Language Acquisition (SLA) of English, especially in the aspect of speaking. From these cases, one can question: Will watching movies have the same effect on people with older age? This study investigates and aims for a conclusion on whether watching American movies truly facilitates SLA for Korean college students as it does for Korean children in the aspect of speaking or not; it focuses only on the aspect of English speaking.

This may differ from person to person; however, listening to actual colloquial conversations in the movies will help the learner to easily absorb the culture, accent, and flow of the English language and strive toward becoming a near-native speaker of English. Through watching American movies, the participants will have the opportunity to learn practical English, instead of the stiff and formal English learnt from the textbooks that are used at school and English

    The video shows the actual performance of students at the five stages of oral English Language Acquisition. The stage one enactment of the Silent Period (can last 0 to 6 months (Syrja (2011 p. 35)) shows two male students. One student with proficiency answering the teacher’s questions about the other student and the other student is silent. The stage two Early Production Stage (can last six months to 1 year Syrja (2011p. 35))) enactment shows a girl student talking quietly with one or two word phases answering questions. The stage three enactment Speech Emergence (can last 1 to 3 years Syrja (2011 p.35)) shows a girl thinking out her questions and answers. She sentences has errors but she is doing a good performance. Second- and fourth-year learners of Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and Russian watched three short videos with and without captioning in randomized order. Spanish learners had two additional groups: one watched the videos twice with no captioning, and another watched them twice with captioning. After the second showing of the video, learners took comprehension and vocabulary tests based on the video. Twenty-six learners participated in interviews following the actual experiment. They were asked about their general reactions to the videos (captioned and noncaptioned). Results from t-tests and two-way ANOVAs indicated that captioning was more effective than no captioning. Captioning during the first showing of the videos was more effective for performance on aural vocabulary tests. For Spanish and Russian, captioning first was generally more effective than captioning second; while for Arabic and Chinese, there was a trend toward captioning second being more effective. The interview data revealed that learners used captions to increase their attention, improve processing, reinforce previous knowledge, and analyze language. Learners also reported using captions as a crutch. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study is to investigate L2 learners’ use of captions2 while watching videos in a foreign language.
