Visual Perception Based on Weber’s Law

Abstract The study focused on finding out if the Weber’s law applies to judgment of size. The present research was designed to account the area of the target as well as the distance, using as the visual concept, and the prediction made that range estimation would follow the said law. In this experiment we asked the subjects to assume a midpoint on 30 lines comprised of ten 2 inch lines, ten 4 inch line and ten 6 inch line. Then we computed each mean error. The results support Weber’s law on judgment size. 2 inch lines have lesser mean error that 6 inch line. 4 inch line has greater mean error than 2 inch line, Based on the results, we conclude that there is a relationship between the Weber’s law and visual perception of the subject.
Introduction
Perceptual set is one of the factors that can effect visual perception. Perceptual set is a predisposition to perceive stimuli in a specific way; that is ignoring some stimuli and attending closely to others. Visual perception uses perceptual set to its advantage. We usually tend to see what we want to see. An example of perceptual set was a television advertisement that I saw while overseas. It was an advertisement showing men hardworking while explaining the nice cold refreshing taste of a drink. Of course after seeing this and hearing this the immediate thing that came to my head was an ice cold beer but the advertisement was selling bottled water. By using perceptual set they were actually selling off their product, very deceiving. The third visual perception tendency in perception is similarity.
