GATEWAY MARKET

Facebook has proven to be a successful marketing tool in allowing companies to advertise to consumer that find the related products interesting and relevant. With social media being an important part in our life, it’s no wonder that companies use Facebook to reach its target audience. “Whilst, some may argue, that adopting a ‘pay-to-play’ marketing strategy may have driven some users away, Facebook is in many ways still a valid and valuable marketing tool.” (Corbett)
Create Awareness “Advertising on the Web can be useful in creating awareness of an organization as well as its specific product and service offerings.” (Belch, 497) By “liking” Gateway’s Facebook page, consumers will be updated on special events or promotions that Gateway may be featuring. Often times, Gateway hosts food specialists and are able to post this information on Facebook for anyone interested. Avid Facebook users will then see this on their daily news feed; when a follower “likes” Gateway’s post, this will appear on the follower’s page allowing their friends to see the promotion. Facebook not only create awareness through its followers, but also through friends of followers. It’s an easy, fast stretch of advertising that reaches a large group of audience in a short time.
Generate Interest By viewing Gateway’s Facebook page, this will generate interest through current posts, links, photos, etc. Consumers can read the “About” section or visit Gateway’s website to gain more knowledge about the company and what they have to offer.

Disseminate Information “For consumer companies, their websites serve as a means of communicating more information about their products and services, philanthropic efforts, and the company itself.” (Belch, 498) Gateway can share on its Facebook page their efforts in serving the community better by offering organic, natural ingredients. Consumers will also want to know that Gateway gets its produce from local farmers.

Social media is not new. Facebook has been around since 2004, YouTube since 2005, and Twitter in 2006. What is new is how social media sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are affecting the way businesses market their products and services. Never before in our history have consumers been able to communicate so effortlessly with each other and with the businesses they frequent. Never before have businesses been able to interact and react to customer feedback so quickly and efficiently. However, just because businesses have the ability to use social media for their marketing and advertising efforts, does not necessarily mean they should. This paper intends to answer the question of how social media has affected the way businesses market their products and services. This question is significant not only to the business, as it directly affects not only their profit, but also their brand, their image, and their reputation. It is also significant to consumers, because as a consumer you will be able to see how you have the power to shape a company’s products and services, as well as shape a company’s image and reputation. No longer can a company run an advertisement on television or radio promoting how ecologically friendly they are and assume people are just going to believe them. 10 years ago that might have worked. Now, consumers can research to see if that company is in fact ecologically friendly and if they are not, consumers can start a Facebook group, a Twitter profile, a YouTube channel, and endless other social media profiles in order to spread the word about the company’s false or misleading advertising. The reverse is also true. If a company creates an amazing quality product which solves a consumer’s need at a fair price, that company may have to do very little traditional advertising as consumers would spread the word about the products through their vast social networks.…

It can readily be observed that Facebook has become a dominant marketing medium for many businesses. Transnational corporations such as Coca Cola and Starbucks, as well as smaller and more localized businesses, make use of Facebook to initiate interactive and personalized marketing while also taking the opportunity to learn more about their clientele. The market penetration of Facebook, currently almost 50% of US citizens, makes it a medium and a tool that cannot be ignored. This report investigates the means and techniques of using Facebook as a marketing tool, along with the benefits of doing so. Marketing over social media is different from traditional marketing in many ways, and it is the willingness of marketers to learn these new techniques, more than any other factor, which has enabled the success of Facebook as a marketing tool. At the same time, it is observed that the motivation for doing so is very profound. Although it has not yet been proven whether or to what degree marketing using Facebook increases sales, it is now considered essential for companies to protect and promote their image through skillful communication using Facebook.…
