POWER IN 1933
The usual question on this period asks you to explain why the Nazis were able to take power in 1933. Very often the question is of the ‘isolated factor’ type where it identifies one of the reasons and asks you to assess how important that was in explaining the success of the Nazis in coming to power. Stresemann died and Germany’s dependency on American loans eventually brought disaster. When the American stock market and economy collapsed in the Wall Street Crash the loans to Germany were immediately stopped and the German economy suffered a second and much more serious collapse. Huge numbers of businesses closed and unemployment soared to six million. This was a key point in the collapse of the Weimar government – it could not survive another round of economic suffering and hardship for its people. The government did not want to fall into the
inflationary trap as in 1923, so it increased taxes and cut welfare benefits which had devastating effects on the German people. This economic crisis was a turning point and played a major part in helping the Nazis into power.

Collapse of Democracy 1930 –1933 - The coalition governments could not cope with the demands of this crisis and parliament dissolved into chaos: the democratic Weimar
Republic was at an end. Under the constitution, Article 48 was utilised to allow the
President, Hindenburg, to rule by decree and during 1930-33 a succession
