Critical thinking is a complex approach to arriving at an educated decision by implementing a strategy for questioning and reasoning that will lead to a well-informed outcome. The process of thinking critically begins with having an open mind. Critical thinking plays an important role because being able to gather and analyze all available data allows me to make decisions to the best of my ability. In the end I have to take into consideration, not only the impact any decision I make will cause me, but also the impact it will cause others. Making any decision, whether it is minor or major,…

The legacy of Loma Linda University (LLU) and how it all began, told by Richard A. Schaefer was nothing short of inspirational. Ellen G. White, the pioneer that had the vision and drive to create the foundation we are all apart of today, deserves a tremendous amount of credit. The mission, vision, and values of LLU encompasses the thoughts and theories that Ellen G. White built the empire known as LLU upon. My interest in the media world started back when I was in 7th grade. This spark first began in photography and has done nothing but grown since then. As I grew older this curiosity went from photography to television. The particular aspect of this field that draws my attention is the world of producing. Although I do not have any prior experience with producing, I know that an internship with WVUA 23 would be the perfect first step in one day becoming a producer. I learn very quickly and I will not stop something until it is completed in a proper manner. I am very eager to learn everything I can about producing and I know I will be able to do so through this internship. I enjoy working in a team-oriented setting where there is one common goal, as I am able to get along with all different types of people. I do not feel that any job is beneath me, and I am willing to do whatever possible in order to gain knowledge in…

I have been raised by parents that believe in my potential to create positive change in the world, and that cultivate my desire to help people on a global level. My upbringing was the genesis of my ambition, but the growth of my specific interest in political science stems from my experience as a translator in Honduras. Until then, I was I didn’t realize how much power one’s voice carries. Without the power to speak out, people are defenseless, and as Euripides described, “It is slavery, not to speak one’s thoughts”. The people of rural Honduras are ruthlessly exploited by the few sources employment. These employers, cognizant of their leverage, set their wages so low that their workers cannot afford to leave the countryside or get a higher education. With no aid from their government, the rural Hondurans fall into a virtually inescapable and corporately-systemized poverty…

On the night I shared the news of my nomination as one of EIU’s 2016 Top Black Achievers with my family, my younger cousin, Diana, sent me a message saying, “Congratulations. I aspire to be as great as you. You literally inspire me to try hard to be successful.” To which I responded, “Aspire to be even better!” I was moved beyond expression. Diana’s words made me realize that by remaining steadfast in my quest for educational enrichment, I am also positively influencing young people who look like me and come from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. My quest for education is sending the message that not only can they reach the doors of higher education, but they can work even harder and accomplish so much more. Coming from a social climate that either indirectly or…

As a general rule, critical thinking involves developing some emotional and intellectual distance between yourself and ideas whether you’re own or others in order to better evaluate their truth, validity, and reasonableness. Critical thinking is an effort to develop reliable, rational evaluations about what is reasonable for us to believe and disbelieve. Critical thinking makes use of the tools of logic and science because it values skepticism over gullibility or dogmatism, reason over faith, science of pseudoscience, and rationality over wishful thinking. Critical thinking does not guarantee that we will arrive at truth, but it does make it much more likely than any of the alternatives do.…
