Dr. Baron Smith Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success
The subject of this paper is the challenge of graduate school, with specific reference to the author’s own goals and personal motivations pursuing an advanced degree. The student presents one short-term, and one long-term goal. Student perceptions of three challenges are presented as barriers in completing graduate course work. Strategies providing support in conquering these challenges are outlined as student interventions. Reflection providing thoughtful analysis on personal strengths and weaknesses of personal communication style are described from the student’s perspective. Strengths in organized thought and effective articulation are apparent and are supported in a recent study that identified the most effective communication as; “Clarity and precision of message that relies on verification” (Robinson, Gorman, Slimmer, & Yudkowsky, 2010, p.209). The student also identifies strengths in committing to team collaboration and respecting others expression. The student’s ability to assess and prevent personal bias from derailing the team process is also recognized. The greatest weakness acknowledged by the student is computer skills. A study of communication among health care professionals identified “Dependence on electronic systems” (Robinson et al., 2008, p.212) to ineffective communication that resulted in errors in treatments. Further reflection identified student weaknesses as; poor use of concise written wording and grammar essential to convey the intended
