“All young people experience learning losses when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer” (National Summer Learning Association). Students forget a lot during the two month current summer break, if it was spread out through the year into mini breaks they wouldn’t forget as easily what they learned, “so a shorter time away from school could increase retention rates” (national education association research). “Advocate of year round schools cites increased performance because students have less time to forget important material than they might during a long summer break” says Amy Pearson a licensed elementary teacher specialized in education, early childhood and child development, there is less time for students to forget what they learned so when they come back from school after the short breaks they do not have to waste a whole month just reviewing what they learned the past year like what is done in September when students come back from the long summer break. Routine is healthy physically and mentally for students. After a two month long summer students sleeping and eating schedules change drastically, “it takes students a long to get used to the school schedule after a long summer” (CBC news). “After a summer of sleeping in or doing things on your time, the alarm bell announcing that first day of school can be a rude awakening. Whether you're an anxious new freshman or a confident senior, heading back to school signals a time of transition: new classes, new teachers, new schedules, and a new social scene.” (Teenshealth.org), with shorter breaks students would not need to take so much time to get used to their newer schedules like they do with the current two month long summer vacation each year. “Frequent breaks might help kids stay more engaged and energized about learning” (Pleasanton weekly news).
