Year Round School Research Paper

Have you ever wondered what year round school would work and function like at Philomath Middle School. Many K-12 schools are successfully using the year round school schedule in the United States. Year round school is a great way to raise academic achievement, reduce absences, and stem summer learning loss.

Frequent breaks in the school year allow students and teachers to recharge themselves, be more active in class, and have higher academic achievement. Students and teachers can get tired if they have ongoing class for ten months without a break big enough to recharge. Some of the illnesses that people could have fought off when they were fully rested could make them sick and make more people absent (edweek.org). Absences due to illnesses can be sustained by year round school because of the time to recharge and can raise their academic achievement by having more time in class than when they would usually be sick. Although summer vacation may be fun, having frequent breaks in the school year can help students retain their knowledge and have higher academic achievement (nea.org). Retaining knowledge because of shorter summer breaks
allows students to raise their academic achievement and stem summer learning loss. Year round school is a great way to raise academic achievement around the United States.

Having a year round school can help stem summer learning loss by having a smaller summer break and having more spread out break time. According to edweek.org, Over 3,000 k-12 schools in the United States are using the year round school method successfully, most k-12 are using the forty five days of school to fifteen days of break spread out through the year (edweek.org). These fifteen day breaks can be a time for students and teachers to look forward to. Students would be less stressed at school and less stress can relieve students and teachers of some of their burdens. As expressed by files.eric.ed.gov, students who attend year round school tend to be more interested in the classes they take until the end of the grading period (files.eric.ed.gov). When students are more interested in school their academic achievement will be greater. Year round school is a good way to have students to be more interested in school and be less stressed about school.

Year round school can help students and teacher’s attendance. Evidence shows that there is a lower percentage of student and teacher burnout because of year round school (files.eric.ed.gov). Student and teacher burnout can lead to less absences due to less time in between breaks in the school year. More breaks in the school year can help families take vacations during a time that is easy or fits their schedule to travel in. When families can’t travel during the summer because of full flight schedules or other activities they tend to take time off of the school year to travel. Easier travel times are a great benefit to year round school and can help the number of absences in the school year.

An amazing benefit of year round school is it can can decrease the unacceptable behavior in schools.
Year round school can decrease the number of theft at school by having the building be occupied for all of the year (cde.ca.gov). “With less theft, the school would feel like a safer place to be in for students. Parents would feel better about sending their children to school if it is a friendlier place.” Year round school can stop some of the bullying and vandalism in schools (cde.ca.gov).With less vandalism and bullying, schools would be able to do more things and the school would feel safer. With less people who go to school who want to make the school environment worse, there would be a high school academic achievement average. Less theft, vandalism and bullying would make a healthier school environment and better academic
achievement. On the other hand, many people still like their summer vacation and the ten month calendar. Some say that frequent breaks in the school year can be hard for families to live in because they would have a varying schedule that would be hard to remember. Some families would find it hard to find childcare during the breaks because of people’s different schedules. Some highschoolers might find it hard to find a job in the frequent fifteen day breaks and they might have to take time after or during school for a job (connectusfund.org). Though year round may be hard to live in, the students that would need to take summer school would not need to take summer school because of no summer vacation. The school district would probably adapt to the new school schedule and have easily accessed childcare. Older students would have to search for new jobs, but there would be jobs that could be done in the afternoon (connectusfund.org).

Overall, year round school is a great way to bring up grade point average, have access to more knowledge, and have more time in school. It will help this school district and the students be more successful in school. Year round school will be very beneficial to the students and teachers of Philomath Middle School by helping lower bullying, raising academics and to have more time able to be at school.
