Some may start to eat and sleep more than usual while others may lose weight and have difficulty sleeping. They may feel agitated or may continuously feel worthless and guilty for no known reasons. What makes this worse is that only half of all
Americans who suffer from depression receive treatment. And about 80% -90% of people who
seek help are treated successfully. Suicide between Americans can differ according to gender.
For males the suicide death rate is four times higher than for females and represent 79% of all
US suicides. Females attempt suicide three times as often as males but are less likely to succeed.
The number of suicide attempts can also differ through different age groups. While older people
are less likely to commit suicide they have a higher rate of suicide completion when compared to
younger people. Statistics show that suicide is the third leading cause among people aged 10-14,
second for people 15-34 years, fourth for people aged 35-44, fifth among people aged 45-54,
eighth for people 55-64, and is the seventeenth leading cause for death for people 65 years or
older.
Depression can also lead people to do drugs and drink as a way of trying to deal with
