Imagine yourself being a full time college student, working twenty hours a week and commuting at least three days a week for an hour long. We can see how this can greatly affect your GPA. Not only would it be work related and commuting, but there are many other factors that can come into play. In this paper we will look what factors affects your GPA. Before I jump into the factors and the actual research, let me explain why I feel it is important to know and why I chose this topic.
One of the reasons why I chose this topic is the fact that I work around 20 hours a week, commute 4 days a week and takes me close to an hour to drive to school. Also to further understand, it isn't only just commuting that can take a toll on someone's GPA. In order to do so, I went about creating research questions that related to that. I wanted to know what exactly affects a student's grades in school. I believe this question has much worth since it covers all the factors leading up to student's GPA. to convince any student in any manner, but I feel it will help students re prioritize how they do things which could potentially harm their GPA. Also this may help students with time management.
In my research plan, I plan to survey college students here at California State University of Northridge (CSUN). Since CSUN has simply too many students, I can't just simply have each and everyone fill out my survey. I plan on taking a small sample, roughly around 30 people, out of the population of about 40,000 plus students. In order for me to get a more accurate result, I will be handing out surveys to students who are: living near or on campus, in my class, random students in the parking structure etc. My questions will short but concise but also having a main focus on what can affect a student's GPA. I plan on creating a list to see of factors that could affect a student's GPA such as: study hours, work hours, units taking, living arrangements, hours of sleep, income, etc. My prediction is that these factors will in fact affect students GPA.
Before I go ahead and conduct my surveys I feel that there will be a strong and positive connection between the amount of work hours and the decrease in GPA, study hours and the increase in GPA, those who aren't working will have a higher GPA versus those students who are working.
Lastly, i predict that the factor in which I feel will have the least and weakest correlation will be the commute time and its affect on the student's GPA. When students are working more hours, it takes away time that could be spent towards studying. This is why I feel that those who are employed and got to school will have a decrease on their GPA. On the other hand yes commuting does have an effect on someone's GPA, however I feel the effect will be very minimal. Before I go ahead and present the methods and my findings on my research, I must include what studies have been done previously on this research
topic.
