This book takes place in Bly which is the children’s home in Essex, most likely around the time the book was written in 1898. Their home is a castle of a mansion on a large estate that belonged to their late father, that is presumed to be haunted. The story is told by the newly hired governess who speaks in first person, retelling an event in her past.

The three most central characters are the governess, Miles, and Flora. The governess, is the narrator of the story, and the witness of the ghosts at Bly. She is young, caring, and unusually embracing to the bereaved children. It is also possible, that she is either crazy or deceived, due to the lack of other witnesses to the ghosts that she claims to see. The other main characters are the children, Miles and Flora. The older of the two is Miles. He is a young boy who has just come home after being kicked out of school for concealed reasons.

Both "The Turn of the Screw" and "Edward Scissorhands" have many traditional features of the gothic genre. However, when compared to each other, it is found that "The Turn of the Screw" has more of the 'traditional' gothic elements. These include things such as the mysterious setting; an atmosphere of mystery and suspense that is present throughout the entire novel; visions, which are a regular occurrence for the Governess; supernatural events - such as the 'ghosts' and the 'possessions' of the children; high emotion; women threatened by males, which is found on the many occasions in which the Governess feels…

In the BBC film version of Henry James’s novel The Turn of the Screw the governess is institutionalised at a psychiatry which indicates that she is most likely mad. The actual film's story is told in flashbacks during consultations between the governess, who is called Ann and her psychiatrist Dr. Fisher. Although (generally) the film follows the tone of the original novel, there are some differences from the original storyline. One divergence, for example, is that the film is set in the post-war time of the 1920’s whereas the novel is set in the…

The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is a well written ghost story detailing the fictional events at an estate in the town of Bly, England. This story is captivating and a thriller to read. Henry James has written over 75 works, varying in style from plays to novels. There are very few characters in this story which allowed for detailed characterization, and leaves the reader with a mental image of how they would view each character such as when the narrator, The Governess, tells the reader, “ I felt ... that I had seen him, on the instant ... the same … in which I had ... seen his little sister. He was incredibly beautiful.” This kind of characterization makes the discussion of the Governess as a heroine, rather than being…

On the surface, Henry James’, “Turn of the Screw” has all of the qualities of an innocent old-fashioned ghost story, but underneath there is much more. The use of ambiguity appears frequently throughout the novel and the reader is left to decide a lot on their own; Are the ghosts real? Who can actually see the ghosts? Which characters can the reader really rely on? These questions can be answered in a variety of different ways, but who is to say which answer is the correct one?
