What Are The Stereotypes Of White People
We live in a society where white people have the upper hand in almost every circumstance. White people aren’t judged by the color of their skin or certain facial features they possess. Because of their looks, people of color are all generalized into one person from their respective race or ethnicity. White people get to parade around the streets in their pickup trucks blasting Tim McGraw and white hillbilly country music, waving around multiple confederate flags, armed with loaded weapons, and wearing white hooded masks that look like a dunce cap covering their entire face which fits, because white people are a huge disappointment. And some white people are still blind to their privilege and refuse to acknowledge it to later say that everyone …show more content…
White people are the ‘norm.’ White people aren’t put into a box and given stereotypes that they are judged off of. They aren’t seen as that one guy who shot up a movie theatre or terrorists who shoot up schools every time they just feel like it. They’re seen as good people with good morals and a shining reputation behind them. I’ve had a white person ask me if I really do eat cats or dogs and now that I think back on it, I want to slam that kid’s head into a wall and ask him if he and his parents go to KKK rallies on the weekends. In the MTV documentary White People, there is a scene where an Asian college student says, “If I was white I don’t think I’d have to wake up knowing that there’s a certain stereotype put on me. Being Asian, I’m smart, I’m good at math, I eat a dog.” That’s something I and many other Asians have been generalized to. They see us all the same. I’ve been referred to by a white boy as “that Chinese bitch” when I’m not Chinese or even East Asian. Non-Asian people, especially white people have this perception that every Asian person they see is Chinese, but white people aren’t white because they’re 25% Italian, 30% Irish, and 45% Swedish. But surprisingly, all Asians look the same because Asia is a very diverse continent with many different countries and …show more content…
Being asked where I’m from, if I was born here, or why my English is so good is microaggression. Another example is when white people mention that America is a melting pot but black people are being killed left and right, people of color are forced to assimilate to this country’s dominant culture and become white-washed, and undocumented immigrants or as white people like to say “aliens” keep being deported it seems this melting pot is only for ethnic whites. When white people claim that the only race is the human race I see it as them being condescending. I take it as them saying that they are the superior race because people with darker skin as most often than not, are compared to and seen as animals. Going through the comments of a YouTube video discussing race, I came across a comment saying that people of color were ‘feral’ and that we would’ve gotten nowhere if it wasn’t for white people. In no way shape or form do I think white people are our savior. If anything, I believe they destroyed everything we had. Indigenous people knew how to survive off of their land and wisefully use their resources. I think white people are the ones who should be considered feral in this situation because they invaded almost every country in the world and enforced their white supremacy beliefs unto them, leaving them with internalized racism and hate but to each their

This article describes an elusive "unspoken" advantage toward white people in our society called " white privilege" which basically gives white people invisible privileges that work against people of color and keep them oppressed. It also says being oblivious to white privilege is ingrained in our culture and is kept that way by the "few groups who have most of the power already"(White Privilege,McIntosh).…

“Taking Back the Center” by Grillo and Wildman, points out the natural advantages of white dominant society. “The white, male, heterosexual societal norm is privileged in such a way that its privilege is rendered invisible”. (Grillo 337) Since, whiteness is accepted as the norm or privileged group, problems of minority groups are ignored and push to the backburner. Those in the dominant priviledged group get to enjoy the many benefits such as having their voices heard in society. On the other hand, minority groups in U.S society are deprived of the opportunity to let their problems be known to society.…

In America, the racial divide between whites and blacks is quickly growing. To fully understand racism, it is necessary to look at how power in the hands of white people has consequently led to oppression and racism towards people of color. Many people, particularly whites, believe that racism stemmed from physical differences between whites and people of color; however, if one truly examines racial differences they will see that these so called “differences” are more social than physical. For centuries, white people have held specific biases and prejudices against people of color, claiming that they were inferior to whites. This notion of subordination began because the white men held the highest form of power one can hold; the power of…

Many people could say that white Americans are living with the fear that they didn’t really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work, but there is always two sides to every story. That other side conflicts with that and say white Americans worked hard to get to where they are in life and it had nothing to do with privilege. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain importance only when different importance are given to…

White privilege is no secret to the people of America. Even today there are people who have an attitude of condescension. Dr. King confronts white privilege in the passage as he states “...the fact that privileged groups seldom give up their privileges voluntarily.” Whites had advantages and a more fulfilling life than Blacks. Why would they want to give up their feeling of superiority? There are individuals who see the morality and right of being equal. Whereas the overall group “are more immoral than individuals.” Whites ignored…

If you are Hispanic, you may have heard comments such as, “Wow, you speak so well… You are not like them… You are really smart… OR You are different and they will really like you.” You might even be asked repeatedly where you are from if your first answer is a city or state in the U.S. The take away messages from these simple statements are clear for many of us. You are not acting like those Hispanics who don’t quite behave like the “norm” – which essentially is referring to White Anglo-American. After experiencing a microaggression, you might wonder, “Were are they giving me a compliment or telling me that people from my culture are less than” or “Were they really curious about where I live or were they telling me that I don’t belong – that…

History has never been one of my favorite subjects; however this class has sparked a new interest in me in regards to my culture and how that culture came to be. This Cultural Diversity course has made me pay more attention to the people around me. I think this awareness has helped me relate to and also understand people in a way that I never have before. The one thing that totally surprised me was finding out that white privilege was something real. I thought that this was an ill feeling and belief that mostly Black people had in regards to the White race. White people, in my mind, had it all; they had certain advantages simply because they were White. The White Privilege section in Chapter 13 of Racial Ethnic Groups states a few of those advantages. I knew that being considered financially reliable, having the ability of articulation, and seeing people of the same race being represented in popular media were common advantages of the White race. Consequently, I thought they saw themselves as privileged and were proud about it. The information from this course that will be the most memorable is that, in general, the people from the White race do not see themselves as have any ethnicity. They feel as though they have been separated from their European roots; they are simply Caucasian. They are also victims of reverse discrimination; I almost laughed the first time I read this in the text. Now, I know that this is a laughing matter. I have seen evidence of this in my life. I asked 50 of my neighbors a yes or no question. This question was: “Do you believe that most Black people would label a random White person they see on the street as a racist?” Out of the 50 people, of evenly varied ethnicities, 41 of them replied with a yes. These results are a relevant example of how much diversity affects the person, currently and throughout history.…

They are socially conditioned to think this way from an early age, just as men are socialized to be chauvinistic, women are socialized to be submissive, and transgender and homosexuals are socialized to be ashamed of their sexuality. Whites would like to believe that they have earned their place in society, but the truth of the matter is, they are privileged. White fragility becomes apparent when this is challenged. White people are reluctant to recognize the impact their race has on their lives and on the lives of all those around them. They have a tendency to believe that what they have accomplished in life is totally because of the person that they are, not because of the color of their skin. Whites never think of themselves as a race or group – they are the majority. Therefore, they never have to think about what it means to be “white.” The subject of race is most likely never a conversation in their household because it is not a term that they associate with. On the other hand, I am willing to bet that the subject of race at a person of color’s home, is a frequent conversation. When the issue of race and racism comes up, whites in general, do not want to talk about racism or want to be accused of being a racist. Some stay silent, some are defiant, and some just bury their heads in the sand and lack the racial stamina to deal with this very real issue out of fear or defensiveness. No one likes to be accused of anything negative, such as being called a racist, sexist, or prejudiced in any way, but the truth of the matter is, people only get defensive when the claim is true. So, deep down, white people must know that they are racist or white fragility would not exist. If you are born non-white, you have a race, you live in a segregated environment – schools, jobs, social images – and opportunities can be very limited because you are less privileged. You may feel like…

Racism comes in different forms of stereotypes, limitation, and assumptions that affect certain ethnic groups differently than others but all have the same negative effect. This then creates stereotypical power status, giving the illusion of how one racial group is superior compared to others. An example that shows great understanding of the issue is the article, “White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard to Talk to White People About Racism” by Dr. Robin DiAngelo who explains how the topic of racism plays a huge role is social interaction between people of different ethnic groups. The author states, “It became clear over time that white people have extremely low thresholds for enduring any discomfort associated with challenges to our racial worldviews.” (DiAngelo, 36) This displays the power of stereotypes to spread around communities about each ethnic group, resulting in them facing daily obstacles of how to handle racial profiling situations that results in people not being able to protect their racial feelings and human rights, challenge white authority, meritocracy which is addressing the issue of unequal right between racial groups, and white centrality. Overall, racism is just but one of the many factors that contribute to this broken state of…

Whites, in most cases, are blind to the racism still in the world. Most are more than aware of the old forms of racism (enslavement, legal segregation, lynching, etc.), but are blind to the modern forms (victim-blaming, contact avoidance, denial of cultural differences, etc.) (Blumenfeld, 2015). It seems that, while whites are unknowingly enjoying the privileges given to them at birth, they are also unknowingly learning inherent, hidden racism. Society as a whole is inundated with hidden accusations towards blacks, surreptitiously painting them as violent criminals. White children are sometimes warned to stay away from blacks, and are thus taught from an early age that people of color are not to be associated with and are either dangerous, lesser, or in some cases both. Most whites are sheltered in the fact that they cannot see past their advantages to see the disadvantages of not only blacks, but people of all colored nationalities, all of whom are victim of a society riddled with subliminal…

White Privilege is the privilege that is given to white skin or light skin people. They do not earn it, it is given to them due to their skin tone. White privilege is unfair for people of color, this is unfair by Caucasians getting better treatment, and this has been going on for generations. The majority of the time a person of color has the chance to earn privilege, a white person comes in and takes the chance the person of color had. People of color are told, they are considered “equal”, yet it is never shown as the old quote has been said before “actions speak louder than words”. The government has always said look past skin color and look at the individual’s personality, yet when shown in action there us hate shown based upon skin color.…

    Racial Microaggressions

The idea of racial microaggressions has been around since the 1970s, you may not know any extremists, you think “I don’t hate black people, so I’m not racist”, but you benefit from discrimination. There are certain privileges and opportunities you have that you do not even realize since you have not been deprived in certain ways. Racial microaggressions are a type of perceived racism. They are more subtle and ambiguous than the more hostile or explicit expressions of racism, such as racial discrimination (Rainey Lecture 2015). Microaggressions are everyday verbal, visual, or environmental hostilities, slights, insults, and invalidations or mistreatment that occurs due to an individual’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and so on. The topic of Self-Segregation and segregation in general has always been a debatable and sensitive topic to speak on. Self-Segregation is the separation of a religious or ethnic group from the rest of society in a state by the group itself. This could also mean inability for a normal social interaction and a form of social exclusion. As an African American student, I’ve been in situations where I did notice the division between minorities and whites in social settings predominantly in schools. Self-…
