What Caused World War One?
There are multiple reasons and events that if occurred will guaranteed start world war one. It is clear that the war was ongoing for a long time, when it began in the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand. However many other reasons took a part in starting the war, some occurring as far back the late 1800's. Militarism, nationalism, and alliances system were the three main factors that were present back then, leading towards this explosive war (Turner, 2002) The First World War was truly “the great war”.

Militarism is a build up of military resources with the goal or aim of using military power or action to achieve certain goals, especially national goals. It was the most important cause leading to the Great War; militarism was similar to the arm race today. Countries built large armies to protect themselves and invade other countries. Britain had a powerful and large navy; Germany wanted to have one too (Southey, 2012). Eventually, Germany and France were competing against each other for larger armies and navies. It was widespread in the early 20th century in Europe and was significant cause of world war one. Nationalists put their interests of their own above the interests of the other countries. It also gave an idea to certain people to develop completely different nations. The pride of people and patriots lead to not letting other nations be dominant and be better than them (Mosley, 2014). Also, the love of one country demands hatred on the other countries. Therefore the pride and love of France demanded hatred to Germany, while the pride and love of Germany demanded the hatred of England. Nationalism also assured the people that their country is superior and fare, throwing the blame on the other countries, which was a huge impact on starting the war. Other factors also had an impact on starting the world war such as the secret alliance

    Nationalism can be defined as having a sense of belonging and loyalty to ones country or nation state. Of all the European nations, France was the first to sport the idea of nationalism. Soon nationalism had increased the people's confidence, and a feeling of imperialism ran through the unified countries. Unified countries such as France, Germany, Russia wanted to extend their empires. But this Imperialism in Europe led to many conflicts between countries. All this Conflict eventually resulted in the beginning of World War I The causes of World War I were the intense nationalism that dominated Europe throughout the 19th and into the 20th century, and the establishment of large armies in Europe after 1871. Imperialism created a rivalry between nations and empires. The build up of armies and navies created fear between nations. France feared Germany, Germany feared Russia, Austria-Hungary and Russia rivalled around Balkans, Britain feared German's expanding navy, Slovakia wanted to free Slavian land from Astria-Hungary's oppression. Italy was jealous of French and English colonies in Africa. Ottoman Empire struggled to survive in a hostile climate. Germany signed a secret alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy, thus creating a Triple Alliance. France and Russia signed an Entente agreement which was later signed by Britain, thus creating Triple Entante. Then Europe was divided into hostile camps.
