A total of 13 colonies lived under the British rule for many years but eventually they began to resent it. What was Common Sense about? (Wait for response) Right! It was about how the colonies should break away from England since they’re not getting anything out of the relationship. Of course the Common Sense won over the rest of the colonists and they began to declare independence. A declaration committee was created that consisted of many famous members, including? (Call on a few hands) Perfect! All right! Ben Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson all took part in the committee among the others. (Proceed forward). The three main parts was a statement of the importance of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, and that all men are created equal, the right to revolt against government and a listing of grievances against the King and the official statement of independence. Now trick question, does anyone know what the declaration was about? (Wait for response) In fact, many people don’t realize that the Declaration of Independence was about the colonists finding King George III, guilty of 27 specific abuses towards them. They were not happy at all with King George III, of Great Britain and his choices. Does anyone know a few decisions King George made that made the colonists upset? (Call on a few hands raised) Great job! All correct! George III prevented colonists from trading free, he increased taxes without the consent of the legislatures, he shut off trade with other parts of the world, he took away the right to trial by jury and he forced colonists to be tried in England.
