What Does It Mean To Be Masculine?
Until the age of six, Ernest Hemingway was dressed as a girl by his mother. The only time he was allowed to be a young boy was when he was hunting in the woods with his father. This affected Hemingway and shaped his views on masculinity. In many of his short stories there are the reoccurring themes of racism, sexism, and coming of age which can all be lead back to the idea of being masculine. What does it mean to be masculine? Hemingway used his view on these topics to create many short stories.Two of his short stories, “Indian Camp” and “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife”, explores the views of men, during this time, on racism and sexism. There are also aspects of coming of age that focus on the masculinity of a young boy. Indian Camp
