What does the word “alien” mean? To me, aliens refer to extraterrestrial beings who live in outer space. The idea of saying alien to another person is very unappealing and disrespectable as we are disregarding them as a person who does not belong in this world. Author Francie Diep of “Why did we ever call undocumented immigrants ‘aliens’?”, questions the idea himself on why immigrants who come illegally are to be defined as these terms. Certains words can leave a great impact on a person whether its meaning is minimal or effective. I could imagine the confusion, anger, and humiliation of when someone would call you an illegal alien which would of course make you feel immediately different from the people surrounding you. During the 1970s, Americans used the term aliens to “to discriminate against, immigrants,” coming into the US, so that they can prevent any more from entering US soil. (53) This affected all the immigrants as many Americans didn’t care on the fact that “people entered the country legally or illegally.”(53). What most people do not understand is the situation of the immigrants wanting to come to the US hoping to find jobs and works to earn money to care for their families. What I want to know is are these the characteristics of human being who is doing his best to help his society or an alien who come uninvited onto Earth? The idea of discrimination should be over and banned for the greater good to let people feel wanted and heart-warming to unite our people as one. The same goes for California Governor Jerry Brown who also wished to end the discrimination of illegal immigrants by removing “the word “alien” from the state’s labor code,” thus having a “negative connotations” onto other immigrants. (52) The so-called illegal aliens who have been living in our land have indeed been contributed to our nation’s economic success. The words that we use influence our views and perception on the people are critical and effective onto finding out whether the immigrants can truly stay and prosper as one in the country itself.
