What Effect Did Hades Have On The Underworld
After the olympians defeated their father, Cronus, and sent the other titans, who participated in the fight against the olympians, to Tartarus. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades split their rule over earth. Zeus was the ruler of the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld. This worked for a while until Hades no longer like it in the underworld and would like to split the rule of above ground. Hades decided to confront his brothers about his thoughts. Poseidon and Zeus however, did not like the idea. For they knew the underworld was the worst place. This started a fight. Poseidon and Zeus eventually won the 2v1 and made Hades go back to the underworld. Hades now knowing that he can’t leave the underworld by himself he asked the other …show more content…
All he needed was a caring, sneaky, and smart king that is a great fighter. The king however would have to be dead (so he would be in the underworld), and the king would have to have a need or desire to return to earth alive. For many years, Hades was searching for the perfect king to carry out his idea. One day, in a heroic battle a king by the name of Aidan died. Aidan was a great king. He looked out for his people and went into battle defending his kingdom. He died in the fight but his kingdom survived but the kings evil brother is ruling now. This caused the king to be devastated but also allowed Hades to make a deal that would benefit both of them. The deal was if Aidan can steal Zeus’ lightning bolt and Poseidon’s trident then he can return to his kingdom. Although Aidan wasn’t one for stealing, he decided to do it for his kingdom. Hades told Aidan the plan. He told Aidan to journey to a very powerful sorcerer and craftsman , Chase. There, Chase would give him a mail, (chain armour), which would protect Aidan from any lightning strikes. Once he has the mail, he must travel to mount olympus on foot, avoiding sea, then climb the mountain and steal the …show more content…
Aidan was kidnapped by Hades in disguise. Aidan was horrified not knowing it was Hades. Hades asked what the plan was and who put him up to it. Aidan refused to tell so Hades lifted up a sharp sword. Swinging it at Aidan’s head, Hades stopped, centimeters away. Aidan had passed the test. Hades let Aidan go and continue with his journey. Aidan followed the plan from Hades and obtained the mail. But secretly, Chase had spelled Aidan and learned about the plan and persuaded him to stay there a year. Chase owed Zeus a favor so he warned him of Aidan. Aidan finally deciding to leave, and now feeling unstoppable with the mail, decided to sail to mount olympus, cutting out days of travel. This was a bad decision for Poseidon could control the sea. With one big wave, Aidan’s ship was destroyed and Aidan was sinking quickly because of the heavy mail. But right before he drowned, Hades saved him and dragged him to the shore. When Aidan woke up, Hades wasn’t there, but Aidan thought that now the two gods would think he’s dead and not expect it. It took him many days to climb the mountain, but he finally made it. Luckily, both gods we asleep. Aidan, tip-toeing around, got the trident and was

In book eleven of the Odyssey, Odysseus travels to the realms of the dead where he encounters many ghosts, including a vision of Hercules. This brief moment portrays the tension between the ghosts--anguishing in Hades’ underworld--and Hercules who had the fortune to live with the gods on Mount Olympus in his afterlife. The tension Odysseus witnesses represents the polarity between heaven--symbolized by Hercules--and hell--symbolized by the ghosts. Death is a frequent motif throughout The Odyssey and by negatively portraying it, especially in comparison to Hercules’ afterlife with the gods, Homer shows why characters such as Odysseus struggle so valiantly to avoid it. Chapman’s translation of the Odyssey best captures this friction because he actively describes the ghosts, uses diction that emphasizes the struggle between heaven and hell, and chooses a meter that highlights this struggle.…

The gods Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon decided to divide the universe amongst themselves; therefore, Poseidon took control over the sea, Zeus gained the sky, and Hades received the underworld. The underworld kingdom, also known as the kingdom of the dead is sub-divided into two separate regions. Tartarus, a land of horrid blackness where the dissolute endured eternal suffering, lay at the very bottom. Titans, who were guarded by giants with a hundred arms, were among those imprisoned in Tartarus. Elysium, or the Elysian Fields, was on the other region of the underworld kingdom. It was a place where the souls of charitable, honorable, good people went after their passing. The dead had to cross the river Styx in order to reach Hades' kingdom. The dead were taken across the river by a boatman named Charon. A multi-headed dog with a serpent's tail, a Cerberus, guarded the entrance to the underworld to ensure the prevention of anyone leaving. The four rivers Acheron (river of woe), Cocytus (river of wailing), Lethe (river of forgetfulness), and Phlegethon (river of fire) flowed through the underworld kingdom. Although Hades supervised the punishment of the dead, he did not torture them…

Eventually Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon had gathered enough strength to fight and bring down their father (Josh 1). Once Kronos had been defeated, Zeus split up the leadership of the world. Poseidon was the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. As the protector of all sea creatures, he was considered the worst tempered, temperamental and greedy god, after disputes with the other gods. His brother, Zeus and hades, dominated their father Cronus and the titans together. They all had to draw straws, to divide the world, in which Poseidon drew the seas. The trident, is the weapon of Poseidon, which can cause earthquakes and shatter many objects. With this power weapon, he was considered to have the strongest power, amongst, Zeus and hades. Many People of Greece, worshipped Poseidon, especially seamen. This substantial impact towards the people of Greece, made them drown horses, as sacrifices towards Poseidon. People would also pray and make offerings in the Temple of Poseidon, before setting out to sea, hoping to be protected and be insured safety. Getting to the underworld was not a problem he just had to perform certain tasks to get Tiresias to come out and give him his prophecy. He had to dig a trench and pour his libations in it for the dead souls. Once he completed all of his tasks that is when everyone started to appear. The first ghost he recognized was his soldier Elpenor. When Odysseus saw him he was shocked, he could not believe that he was dead. Elpenor groaned and told Odysseus about his death and now he did not get a proper burial. This is essential to ancient greeks because that is the only way a soul can be at ease in their afterlife. Every single ghost Odysseus came in contact with was miserable, angry, and bitter. They all asked about their family (mainly sons) and had nothing positive about themselves. As said by Achilles he “rather be a slave on earth for another man- some dirt poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive- than rule down here over all the breathless bodies”(Homer, Odyssey 265). For a male to say this shows how bad the underworld is; Ancient Greeks were all about their pride and manhood therefore if he rather be a slave to another man take away all of his pride. Also, when Odysseus was leaving the underworld all the spirits kept surrounding him “thousands raising unearth cries, and blanching terror gripped me” (Homer,…
