What Is Anisakiasis Simplex?
Three terrifying parasites with one thing in common: they are even more dangerous dead than alive was the primary focus of this episode. It is often when the parasites die that a host will then realize they even had an infection but by then it can be too late.
The first victim felt nauseous and cramping. Doctors had discovered a mass on the victim’s stomach that was causing the blockage. There were fragments of a worm inside of this mass and the doctors had found that the victim had eaten raw fish a few weeks prior to developing symptoms. It was diagnosed a very rare parasite called Anisakiasis simplex which is a disease caused by the parasitic worm Anisakis. He was diagnosed with River Blindness. River Blindness or Onchocerciasis is caused by the larvae of the Onchocerca volvulus worm. The parasitic worms live in the mouth parts of black flies and when an infected fly bites a human, the parasite enters the body through the bite wound. There the worms reproduce generating over a thousand larvae a day. The victim was prescribed a drug called DEC which kills the larvae but leaves the adults untouched. His body was reacting to the dead worms inside his skin and that would cause a tremendous amount of rashes and irritation on the skin. More and more worms were accumulating in his eyes and were triggering an immune response that could damage the retina. After five years, the patient was harboring more worms than ever so the doctor wanted to try the drug Ivermectin and the victim was actually the first person in the country to be given this drug for Onchocerciasis which had previously only been used in animals. After a week, the drugs had finally killed the worms and his sight was saved. Onchocerciasis is the second most common infectious cause of blindness in the world.
