In democracies, civic engagement is required for democracies to function. In nations lacking democracy, civic engagement is often done through the arts (film, music, visual arts, theatre, etc.). Sometimes they combine. In my opinion, it is the combination of these procedures to effectively address the social issues.
The spirit of a stable democracy is about the voters enthusiastically occupied in civic life by taking the liability of structuring the communities, resolving communal issues, and by contributing in the electoral and political procedure(About). Studies on political participation have identified some of the inherent principles that are optimistically linked with the level and quality of engagement. One of the main values is political efficacy, or the internal efficacy of an individual to make a change, and the external efficacy revealing the responsiveness to the participation (Delli).

She after the murder of her death Judy engaged herself to bring a social change regarding the gay community. A lot of education has occurred through her book. People were made aware of the gay community, and it initiated a national level discussion. Then "The Laramie Project" further aggravated the discussions making it relatively acceptable in the society.
