Why Is Civic Engagement Important?

I would define civic engagement as a selfless act meant to contribute to society. Civic engagement is something that is very important in the world. Altruism is one of humanity's defining characteristics and is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. Despite the rise in quality of living for many Americans, there is still a great need for others. This experience has solidified my position on this issue. A group of people can get together on a weekend and make some difference in the lives of others. We did not just offer our services, but also our company. The whole experience was not something that I would consider a chore or waste of my time. There was no skin off of my nose for doing this, but my work would likely have gone undone if we had decided to help some other place.

Our goal was to spruce up the Goodwill Home for Veterans located in West Peoria. There was a group of people repairing gutters on the outside. Another group had to move a garden from one side of the yard to another. The group that I was in had to paint many of the interior walls of the veterans home. There were a lot of walls to cover and so we split up into groups of two. One would do “edging”, which is painting around the trim, and the other would paint the rest of the wall. When I showed up, there were no more rollers left so I had to do edging. I am not a super tall person so I had to stand on the tips of my toes to edge the part by the ceiling. I also had to squat down a lot which was not much of a deal when I was doing it but for several days after I could barely bend my legs they were so sore. It was a nice day out and I would have liked to work outside, but there was no need for me there. Overall the work was not difficult but was at times very
