What Is Dwell In Possibilities Edmundson
Generally speaking, Edmundson’s essay is a composition I can agree with. He posits that the desire exhibited by many members of my own generation, a desire I myself relate to, can either help them to truly experience life, or it can be mishandled and cause a life of indecision and impossible expectations. Personally, I believe the key theme of this essay is the idea that possibilities are positive, but only because they pave the way for reality. If we allow ourselves to become curators of an infinite number of futures, instead of voyagers intent on discovering where our future lies, the we will never truly experience life to its full potential. With sitting back and allowing life to act as an external force is one extreme of the spectrum of ways to live your life, and a manic overexposure to options on the other, Edmundson argues for a golden mean. This middle ground involves both seeking new possibilities, and allowing yourself to fully experience those possibilities without neurotically planning the future. “Dwelling in Possibilities” claims that the mindset, exhibited by many students, of being anxious to commit to something and potentially close other possibilities …show more content…
Traveling, meeting new people, hearing interesting ideas, and understanding other cultures are all important measures of success in the life of a millennial. No one would argue that any of these goals are deleterious, in fact, most would agree that they are lofty goals. When people undergo novel experiences, they grow on a personal level. Traveling opens eyes to see the true scope of the world. Meeting new people facilitates the growth of empathy and patience. New, and often contradicting, ideas hone critical thinking skills and challenge presumptions. Becoming familiar with other cultures allows young people to understand how they fit into the global spiderweb of

Traveling around the world is repeatedly viewed as expensive and luxurious. Therefore, only those who are rich can experience it. Of course traveling has become a social norm as millennials discover the benefits of it. In Amanda Machado’s “How Millennials Are Changing Travel” article, she conveys that Millennials are expanding their vacations and escaping their comfort zone. Furthermore, in Derrick Fung’s “How Millennials Are Changing Travel”, article he asserts that Millennials thrive for experiences and are influenced by social media to travel. And how the travel industry is booming due to it. Both articles persuade Millennials to travel and seek adventure despite the hardship with the economy.…

Traveling is a rite of passage for some younger people. Many consider these times rewarding to the psyche of a young adult, as experiences in other lands broaden their senses. College students embark on sabbaticals to spend time in the real world. Others temporarily replant themselves, to experience other places, cultures, and languages, and in doing so to find out more about themselves. And there are that select few who use relocation as a form of escape from their tumultuous lives, because as they say, “the grass is always greener…” Some never return home. Whatever your reason for these journeys, it should be understood that going outside one’s comfort zone can test your mettle, and good judgement and wit are crucial in surviving in a foreign land, where language, culture, and even racism are an issue. A few wrong steps and you may find yourself a few shingles short of a roof over your head. It is that last category of drifters who define “Geese,” where Dina and four other ex-patriots find themselves sharing a one room flat in Japan. These misfortunate individuals are escaping from themselves, and through misplaced pride, ill preparation, and execution find themselves on the brink of self-annihilation, finally regressing into their own futileness.…

After closely reviewing Erikson’s eight stages of life I find that currently I am facing his seventh stage. This stage is known as Generatively VS. Stagnation it happens when you are a mature adult. This stage I see myself as because I am needed in the life that I am living. I live my life striving for the pursuit to take care of my family, and live a well-balanced life. Being the family man and devoted parent that I am Erikson’s theory states that many adults obtain their needs to be needed, and by doing so they also direct the next generation in a direction. By being a generative adult I am committed to fulfill a greater need than just my own I am committed to leading my next generation to success with my positive guidance. The children I am raising are what make me a generative adult with a purpose to live. How can I fashion a gift is the main focused question of this stage. It took me some time to fully understand what that meant, but I believe it to mean what I can do in my life for my next generation to remember me for. This means am I going to be remembered as the lazy person who care about nothing, or am I going to be remembered for the amazing person I was that accomplished everything he set his mind to. I have answered this question a number of times by actively being involved in my daughter’s life and my family’s life, and showing them I can accomplish everything for us to have a great life. This means my role as a great father I am actively engaged in my daughter’s life I play with her, read to her, do puzzles with her, practice words with her and try to be a positive influence to her. My daughter is only two, and by being as positive I can be I am hoping that she grows up to be very talented and smart. The other side of it is I am a very hard worker, and provided everything that my family needs, so in by doing this it shows her what hard work can got you. Being an active father in my daughter’s life and future children’s life I am hoping will bless…

While I have enjoyed learning about the world my entire life through books, school, and the internet, I have yet to to see it. In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet the audience is regularly confronted with the abstract notion that life is ephemeral. This notion is depicted through several scenes, during the confrontation between Hamlet and Laertes when the queen dies, the ‘to be or not to be’ soliluquoy and when Hamlet is conversing with the gravedigger. During these scenes William Shakespeare portrays themes that are still relevant to this day’s society.…

Dr. Edmundson targets this essay towards incoming college freshman, hence the essay tends to be of relation to a younger audience. The author writes this essay to advocate that one should live a life of self-fulfillment, a life of following one own’s passion, even if it may not be the highest paying or the easiest to accomplish. Starting off with a personal anecdote of a conversation between the author and his father, Edmundson describes a period in his life in which he was going to “go along” (178) with the usual college perspective, but then changed his mind with the guidance of his father. In the…

Hattie Owen, the main character in ‘A Corner of the Universe’, expressed this profound outlook on life which relates to people all over the world at any stage in their life. This idea tells us that we shouldn’t just have an uneventful, “safe” and dull life; instead, we should investigate and probe around with all the possibilities that life could bring us; life will be a lot more fascinating this way. This can encourage people everywhere to not just spend 80 or so years living in monotonous routine, but to accept the opportunities that are given to you. The main reason that people don’t do this is because they are worried that it will end in disappointment or that they will make a mistake. It’s alright to make errors, because you can learn from them. It is better to have lived and learned than to not have lived at all. What if you were given the choice of having a huge promotion to the top job in your company or staying at the bottom of the food chain? What would you choose? Say you did choose the promotion, what if you messed up and fell all the way to the bottom again in embarrassment? That doesn’t matter! Life isn’t life without a little risk. This is what Hattie Owen meant in her deep and meaningful…

Paul Fussell once said, “All the pathos and irony of leaving one’s youth behind is thus implicit in every joyous moment of travel: one knows that the first joy can never be recovered, and the wise traveler learns not to repeat successes, but tries new places all the time.” Going around the world would be a fascinating goal for the future. Meeting new people and getting to grasp what the world is like . Traveling would be interesting to do in the future because first I can challenging myself, second the adventures, and third to appreciate life.…

I have always had a knack for traveling. Since a young age I have found comfort in going to places I have never been. Embracing the culture and questioning why things are done a certain way and exploring the incredible world that I am surrounded by. It brings me peace just being somewhere I have never been. I think it is important to be put in situations that you might not be familiar with and learn how to adapt, how to survive on your own. It’s important to go to unfamiliar places and meet unfamiliar people.…

Looking to the future and being afraid of making the wrong choices, is a natural emotion that mostly all humans feel at least once in their lifetime. In the poem written by Karen Connelly, The Story, she brings to light the fear that us as humans feel when looking towards our future and hoping we do not mistakenly choose the wrong path. Connelly shows us in her poem that even with all the ‘scars’ from our past failed decisions, we are capable to move forward and continue living our lives. This piece of literature is a timeless poem, that anyone at all could relate to in one way or another. In some way everyone has been afraid of looking towards a goal we have set for ourselves, and contemplating whether or not we will make a wrong decision…
