In his career, Jean Dubuffet preferred drawings to paintings. Dubuffet was credited with his high ability to depict landscapes and figures, portraits of street scenes, friends and places he visited in his choice of the subject matter. Indeed, he was traditional. Interestingly, his drawings Dubuffet deployed a primitive technique of art making, characterized by simple, childish figures, visually dramatic palette. It is these characteristics that have made Dubuffet’s artwork appealing and instrumental in the modern psychology. Lili by the Window (1935) depicts some of the mentioned features. It is a gouache portrait produced out of papier-mâché dolls of his future wife.
