First off, my cultural identity would not be the same if it wasn’t for my family. My mother’s side is who i’m closest to, and most of them are cajun. Growing up around my mother’s side of the family help me find my culture and played a part in finding my identity as well, because of her cajun heritage. My father’s side however is mostly found more up north as in Michigan and…
Everyone is raised in their own ethnic surroundings. This is mainly based upon the ethnicity to which one belongs, the type of parents by which one is brought up, or the “Americanization” of parents from another culture. An individual informs others of their cultural standards through their actions, their initiative, their respect of family, and their futuristic thinking. These aspects build up one’s personality and lifestyle.…
A person's culture is not decided by your whole family’s culture but it is decided by you and your openness. In the personal essay “Two Ways to Belong in America” by Bharati Mukherjee two sisters go separate way and follow two totally different cultures. In the story mira wanted to view the world through her family’s culture and view the world that way this. This is important because your culture makes a huge affect on how you see the world and people in the world. Also in the story, Bharati wants to go and follow a different culture than her family. This is important because she has taken a different road than the rest of her family has.…

One of my earliest experiences with being encultured which I may not have even known was the week following my birth. There were some complications with my birth, and my mom tells me that there was a significant amount of people visiting me in the hospital at the time. I am also told that the hospital staff knew who my family was because they were astounded at how many people were coming to visit me. All of these people around me at such a young age already were an indirect, or passive way of learning that I had many people around me who already cared for me. This is a staple of a collectivistic culture in which the community and or family looks out for each other, and those family values are very important. I had already begun learning that there are many people that care for me that are coming to see me. Even though I may not have been completely aware of it because I was so young, this was one way I could have began to feel a sense of our collectivistic culture. This would help prime me at a young age to feel a sense of belonging, community, and family.…
Is an individual made from the roots he or she is from? People’s personal identities and family along with cultural legacies all go together to create an individual person, but an individual person’s identity is made from their own personal experiences in life. How do family traditions and legacies contribute to and/or inhibit an individual’s identity? Or is self-identities created from one’s own self? Self-identity is what a person thinks about one’s self and what his or her place is in the world. A person’s identity is made up of his or her own personal experiences and searching within one’s…
Culture is an important and vital component that defines who and what we are as a person. We interface with cultural difference on a daily basis. So what exactly is culture? Good Question! I will attempt to identify my own cultural and explain what cultural means to me. So, lets start by defining the term culture. “Culture is a particular society that has its own beliefs, ways of life, art, etc.”. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2015) My cultural identity consists of several parts. I am most foremost a female that has a variety of racial genetic makeup of African-American, Native American, and European descent. I was raised in a Christian religious household and in a primarily single parent home. I have a sister and a half brother on my father’s…
My family is Nigerian therefore I am a Nigerian, Nigerian culture has affected my personal identity positively, it affects my education, the way I see life, my belief and traditions. My family’s customs and traditions definitely played a vital role in my pursuit for quality education. Growing up in a family where education is fundamental and the absence of a college degree is unacceptable, several factors underlie my being and my approach to life, this lifetime of experiences has shaped the way I speak, present myself and the way I think.…
Until today, I never put much thought into my culture identity, I had always thought that I was Mexican and that was it, there is nothing more to it. My parents who are fully Mexican have always taught me that my culture is very important. They always told me that, my culture is one of the things that make me stand out from the rest. I never saw it as something important, because I thought culture was just your race and nothing more. I only ever thought that I was a girl who came from a Mexican background and was born and raised in America. Now I see that my cultural identity makes me who I am, a Mexican-American woman. My culture is very big on food, it is one part that makes it known to others, music and religion are also very important in my culture, they tell a story, more importantly they tell my story.…
Cultural identity is a huge part of who we are. Not only does it define our interests, it also dictates why and who we interact with. It affects so many things in our life that it can be hard to find anything at all that isn’t affected by it. A family is made up of people who care and love one another. A positive childhood and family tradition is what keeps a person connected to their family. No family is perfect and they will go through things, but it’s the love that keeps them together. Family traditions and cultural contribute to an individual self- identity because people who have knowledge of their family history are well-adjusted. Some people may disagree that family history is not shared and valued among individual family members. However, family history is shared and valued among individual family members because it’s what makes the individual who they are as a person which inhibits the person-identity.…

My first reason why family is important to my life is because they have always been there for me. Many of my peers succeed at certain sports or even various classes like English or Calculus. Although, I did struggle with my other activities and curriculum classes, family has always been there. Throughout middle school and high school, I competed with my friend for captain of the soccer team. I didn’t beat him until eighth grade when my hard work finally paid off. Because of this, I now realize how dedication and persistence can help someone achieve one’s goals. If I never decided to join the soccer team and compete for first captain, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to challenge myself and gain the skills and characteristics that would benefit me throughout the rest of my life, if it had not been for my family pushing me to excel.…
One of the first steps of finding one’s cultural identity is analyzing your family’s background. Since a majority of my family grew up or lives in Florida, and I did as well, I can say that I am a native Floridian. Also, most of my family grew up as or is Christian, and I can say that I am as well. My parents grew up in a small town, and I did as well. There are a lot of similarities between their identities and mine when one looks the surface. However, there is much more to cultural identity than what one’s family’s identity…
