Professional educators are also more organized and prepared throughout the day. Students are given clear directions and structure so confusion is less likely. Stress and anxiety of learning new things is lessened which may result in higher grades and content retention. The school day runs much more smoothly so students are able to enjoy their childhoods.
Student Engagement Strategies
Along with the behavior of professional educators, student will need certain strategies selected and put in place by their educator that optimize engagement and motivation. Some students are naturally motivated while others need a little help. The ultimate goal is for students to be motivated on their own, without the need for excessive extrinsic factors. The extrinsic rewards may work, but they will not be lasting. Try to find something that motivates them to want to do well on their own. Engagement is shown at varying levels. First, classroom systems and operations (including appropriate behavior and consequences) will be clearly explained, in detail, at the beginning of the year and put in a conspicuous place so that every student can easily read them and be reminded of them every day. Following Harry Wong’s Effective Classroom method, I believe that in teaching students how to do simple things within the class, the classroom environment will be more organized, students will always know what to expect, and with unwanted behavior at a minimum. Students are more willing to do the things you ask of them and complete classroom tasks when they know what to do (Burkhart, 2014). I also like how Wong’s model provides a trusting relationship between student and teacher so that students feel more comfortable and safe, which can help them overcome challenges and take risks. Second, instead of using negative consequences and punishments, I want to reward ideal behavior and create a classroom that focuses on the positives. I understand that this may be difficult in some respects, but aligning with PBIS, positive behavior supports will help create an environment where appropriate and desired behavior is normal and second nature for students which will allow students to be able to focus on learning.
