What Is Professionalism?
Professionalism Being a professional educator means one has completed the necessary certifications, qualifications, and training for their degree program, and are therefore, an expert in their field. Having the title of a professional warrants a specific behavior to become credible and trustworthy. Since educators often work with children, these qualities are of the utmost importance. Behaving professionally affects the learning environment and promotes the well-being of students because it gives them stability and lets them know what to expect from their trusted educator. When a teacher is professional, students can feel comfortable and safe that their teacher has their best interest at heart. One way teachers can do this is by being an advocate …show more content…
Professional educators are also more organized and prepared throughout the day. Students are given clear directions and structure so confusion is less likely. Stress and anxiety of learning new things is lessened which may result in higher grades and content retention. The school day runs much more smoothly so students are able to enjoy their childhoods.
Student Engagement Strategies
Along with the behavior of professional educators, student will need certain strategies selected and put in place by their educator that optimize engagement and motivation. Some students are naturally motivated while others need a little help. The ultimate goal is for students to be motivated on their own, without the need for excessive extrinsic factors. The extrinsic rewards may work, but they will not be lasting. Try to find something that motivates them to want to do well on their own. Engagement is shown at varying levels. Behavioral engagement is observed in student’s actions; emotional engagement is shown in values, interests, and attitudes towards school; cognitive engagement is shown

Following Harry Wong’s Effective Classroom method, I believe that in teaching students how to do simple things within the class, the classroom environment will be more organized, students will always know what to expect, and with unwanted behavior at a minimum. Students are more willing to do the things you ask of them and complete classroom tasks when they know what to do (Burkhart, 2014). I also like how Wong’s model provides a trusting relationship between student and teacher so that students feel more comfortable and safe, which can help them overcome challenges and take risks. Second, instead of using negative consequences and punishments, I want to reward ideal behavior and create a classroom that focuses on the positives. I understand that this may be difficult in some respects, but aligning with PBIS, positive behavior supports will help create an environment where appropriate and desired behavior is normal and second nature for students which will allow students to be able to focus on learning. The goal of SWPBS systems is to help students gain

Students are more engaged if the teacher drops hints about a new unit before actually revealing what it may be. This can activate emotional signals and keep the students stimulated. Similarly, students also work well if they are given the opportunity to choose a particular topic, or asked to design one of their own. If students choose the lesson, they better understand the goal of the lesson and become more emotionally invested in and attached to the learning outcomes. Students who take the time to brainstorm about what they already know or would like to know help students create goals.…

Everyone has a different meaning of the word professionalism. Some people believe professionalism means dressing smart and/or appropriate for work and doing a good job. Others believe it means that you have many degrees. "In fact, positive reinforcement is probably more effective for students because they are often unsure of how they should act, and reinforcement for good behavior goes a long way in developing an enthusiastic and cooperative learning climate" (Armstrong 2015, pg. 148). The tools I have seen from observing in classrooms that I would like to utilize to encourage good behavior would be: the clip chart, praise bucks, and group points. The clip chart has five areas of behavioral management including: awesome day, great day, ready to learn, think about it, teacher's choice. I have found this clip chart to be effective when substitute teaching. The group points are an excellent way to reward a group of students that are working extra hard in the classroom, with a special reward. Positive reinforcement goes a long way in creating a peaceful classroom and managing behavior.…
