Today, we have progressed as a society, growing to be more understanding, but discrimination is not completely gone. It wasn't until 1920 that the first black man Fritz Pollard, in the professional football league. (Gleaner.com). In addition in 1946 is when Jack Robinson became the first black player in the MLB and Willie O’Ree in 1958 who became the only black player to participate in the NHL until 1974 (Gleaner.com.) His home was vandalized his home with swastikas. Many disturbing images were found inside the home, the word “Trump” and all other sorts of derogatory words directed at the player written on the walls. When the New York Giants player returned to him home he was greeted with seeing the swastika logo graphited on his walls and the quote “nigger lover” written above his bed. Nikita Whitlock, the Giants player, was shocked with what had happened to him and couldn’t understand why. He has not done anything wrong but just played the sport that he loves, yet people broke into his home and displayed the hateful behavior, just because of his color his skin.
This is appalling to me, I can't seem to understand why, with The National Football League being “68.7% black, 0.7% Latino, 1.1% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 0.9% ‘other’” for one example, anyone could be convinced that color doesn't belong in sports (Perry). With this particular sport being this diverse and predominantly black, how could anyone hate a single person? It is sad that in 2017 we have this problem.
