What Is Selina Said To Austin's Backyard
“I disagree with your interpretation of the main idea.” Selina said to Austin as they sat on the cement stair in Austin’s backyard, discussing about their short story analysis work from English class. The sky was still filled with gray clouds, but at least the rain had cooled down the heat of late summer a bit.
Selina felt bad for Austin, that he was stuck with her for this “working buddies” thing in English. Why would someone stupidly arrive late to class and become my deskmate, and then stupidly save me from an awkward situation between my ex-best friend and me?
“Why?” Austin asked, looking puzzled.
“First of all, the main idea of the story is often linked to the realization of the character. Nobody in the story realized that. Also, if the

Selina took a deep breath. “Weakness. Weakness is not something people can escape from.” Selina bit her lip gently. “In real life, Teddy was powerless. He had to follow orders and face the disdains of his aunt and uncle. In the attic, he was the king and everyone needed him. At the end, as his uncle mocked his ‘paper dolls’, he eventually realized that he was weak and did not have what it took to be treated like the powerful king he imagined to be.”
“Hmm…” Austin fall in contemplation. “Never thought about that this way.”
Of course he didn't. Selina could tell from his eyes that this guy was still filled up with hope and

I don’t care which question you got wrong on your high-ninety paper. Go get a seventy and see how that’s gonna feel like.” That was what Caroline had said. Selina sat on her bed, holding her math test, staring into the void. A bright 68 was written on the top right corner, a mark that she never got in her entire life. She put the paper aside and hugged her legs tightly, burying her head into her arms as tears quietly slid down her face. Grade 8 math was like hell for students of Winterberry Elementary School, and most of them were frustrated because of their marks. Selina had knew that from the beginning. Why did she show off her high-nineties to everybody, then? She did not intend to make others feel worse, she just wanted her fellow classmates to pay attention to her and care more about her, that was all. I don’t deserve that. Selina wasn’t someone who spoke English fluently, nor did she have good communication or teamwork skills. Others left her alone because she was never able to state her ideas without stammering or contribute her fair share when working in groups. Except for Caroline, who always listened to her patiently and worked with her on all group projects, and now the only thing she did in return was to rub the high marks in Caroline’s face. I should be ashamed. All I can bring was trouble. All I was capable of doing was making other people feel bad. I was born to let other people down. Selina’s body trembled as she broke into a hysterical laughter.

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Once she arrived to her new locker, she had a difficult time accessing it. After the twentieth time, she was finally able to open her locker and put all her supplies inside. On her way to her first class, she had overheard that the math teacher assigned arduous assignments causing an abundance of students to drop out within the first week. Mrs.Katra, the math teacher, gave a "I've been doing this for 35 years, I know all the tricks" speech for 30 minutes and gave us a homework assignment afterwards; at first glance it didn't seem difficult but after looking at it for a while, Aliyah began to feel uneasy about the class. She usually liked challenges and was intrepid but school was important to her and she didn't want to disappoint her parents.…

“Wrong answer Laurran, do it again,” Mrs. Taylor raised her voice at me. The room went silent. Nobody was talking or moving, to scared to get scolded by Mrs. Taylor. I always wondered who would want to marry her, or how she treated her kids at home. I honestly feel bad for her two kids if she treated her own students this way. I sat there, my eyes tearing up from embarrassment and failure. Mrs. Taylor doesn't understand how hard it is; doing math that is a grade above your level of experience. She doesn’t understand the pressure that is on me from my parents to do good and from the older kids in my class to show them I’m not dumb and I can do this.…

“Miss Moeller, what is your question?” he asked in an annoyed tone. His eyes looked like they were going to burn a hole right through me. I felt like the stupidest person in that class. I had always understood math and it was frustrating to not comprehend what he was doing. Math had always been one of my strongest subjects and I never had trouble making A’s in my previous math classes. I was already so lost in that class that I didn’t even know where to begin. As Mr. Rogers awaited my response, I could feel everyone in the class looking right at me. I wanted to sprint out of the classroom and run home. I wasn’t smart enough for an AP math class. I didn’t have the intelligence or determination.…
