What Is The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner Persuasive Essay
Since the beginning of it all, children are taught that as long as they have fun then everybody won. However, at some point between puberty and the stage of adolescence the fun begins to fade and competition becomes the aspect of every teen’s life. As athletes the teaching of technique and skill are drilled into the lifestyle, as scholars the teaching of studies and participating in other extra curriculars are the main focus and as outsiders the teaching of becoming insiders brings happiness to their lives. No matter what clique a teenager becomes a part of they are all trying to reach the same goal, having an idolized lifestyle. In The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner by Alan Sillitoe, the main character, Smith, realizes the lack of needing such a lifestyle as well as the unimportance of competition to succeed. Adults continuously utter, “I promise that high school will be the best four years of your life… so take it slow.” Teenagers casually nod their head and give the occasional eye roll, because adults are always wrong anyway. Except when reality sets in for …show more content…
Then they say, “I can’t wait to be 18.” and of course, when they are 18, yet another milestone has been met, but they continue to state, “I can’t wait to be 21.” it becomes more of a routine until they are the age of 30, many milestones are met and they realize they were focused on what they wanted in the short time being that they don’t prepare themselves for the future. “...I’ll get you trained so that you wack every man in the Free World….” (Sillitoe pg. 35 PDF) Many teens do not have guidance which is why many of them end up wishing they could take it back. While at times the governor seems as if he wants what is best for himself and not for Smith, it is clearly visible that at times the governor can intervene in a good way and become the role model that Smith needs in his

Though I had not meant for it, running has become representative of me, whether I like it or not. It’s my individualism, and in a time when everyone strives to be unique, it’s also my common link to normalcy. So why is is a big deal? Well, I have found that individualism is nearly always encouraged, but only as long as it’s done with compliant undertones. The fine line between sheer brilliance and utter insanity is in fact the one thing that makes both impossible: a link to the social ordinary. It’s quite the paradox, in which I have yet to find a middle ground. But at this time, everyone seems to be looking for…

Richard L. Worsnop offers multiple different points about high school sports and athletes. Concerns about the oppression of young athletes and debating if high school athletics “builds character”, are some of the main issues pointed out. Some coaches believe interscholastic sports competitions teach everything about character and teamwork, while others believe overemphasizing a win can teach the growth of negative character traits. Meanwhile, there are no doubts that certain drugs can enhance an athlete’s performance, but this can lead to injury and other harmful effects. High school athletes are sometimes considered, “dumb jocks”, which leads to the question if student athletes should maintain a certain grade-point average. Some players think…

Throughout the novel of ‘The running man’ the theme ‘things are not always what they seem’ is a consistent idea in the text. Michael Gerard Bauer’s narrative is a story of the value of perception as characters are constantly being mis-judged. Like Mrs. Mossop, josephs ‘nosey’ neighbour, the ‘dangerous, sick man’ known as Tom Layton and The Running Man who is described as the ‘stuff from nightmares’.…

Leon Botstein explained most of this from his perspective as the President of Bard College and as the author of Jefferson’s Children: Education and the Promise of American Culture. The article called “Let Teenagers Try Adulthood” first appeared in the Op/Ed section of the New York Times in 1999 after the Littleton (Columbine) shootings. Botstein writes that the categories of insiders and outsiders that are so popular in today’s high schools are shaped the way they are because there are damaging cliques that hold sway because of superficial definitions of attractiveness, popularity, and sports prowess. He points out that when student’s graduate high school and go on to college they finally understand what opportunities they missed and how much time is lost (21). Botstein writes that high schools as they are now are obsolete because they were made as a place to help young adults mature but that is not happening anymore because they grow up faster now than they did when high schools were made. Botstein points out that adults should realize that just because they don’t like dealing with young adults doesn’t meant adults should isolate teenagers that are growing up physically and hormonally in a high school setting to hide them from the real world. Given the poor quality of teachers and school administrators, who are more often chosen because they were coaches before, this means that when…

High school, somehow, is an interesting chapter of a person’s life. Automatically, a teenager feels a lot older when entering high school. He or she feels more mature, or at least most teenagers. Since they feel older, they want to start doing things that they would not be allowed to do while being in middle school. They want to start going to more parties; their social lives become an important part of their lives. All they want to do is hang out with their friends, not do homework nor study for tests. They do not want to learn or at least listen to things that “will not benefit them” for whatever career they wish to pursue at that moment. According to them, that knowledge will not be used by them during their whole lives. Sean Covey is the vice president of Innovations and Products at FranklinCovey, which is an organization that devotes to helping individuals and other organizations achieve greatness; he also is a popular speaker to youth and adult groups. He has written some books, including The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make, in which he has a chapter where he writes about the…

“I want to see the beauty. In the ugly, in the sink, the suffering, in the daily, in all the days before I die, the moments before I sleep.” (goodreads.com) High school is expressed as the best of times, but also as the worst of times. Regardless of whether we desire to or not, it is a part of our lives we will remember forever. It is when we start to figure out who we are, and decide the life we want to live. While we go through this significant phase of our life, it is essential that we appreciate it to the best of our ability by focusing on living in the moment, taking the time to enjoy ourselves and helping others enjoy themselves too.…

The sentence “You’re never gonna fit in much, kid” explains why these teenagers have to resist the oppression given by adults. In today’s society, many teachers always expect their students to achieve higher score in tests and most of the parents always expect their children to be successful in all aspects. They both have high expectations on teenagers. In the meanwhile, teenagers keep trying to do their best to fit adults’ standards, but the problem is that adults will never be satisfied with their performance and keep making new requirements. Then the disappointment of adults will make teenagers depressed and pay too much attention on their academic performance. They probably lack confidence and are unable to balance study and entertainment well. As expressed in the article “Adolescent Mental Health And Academic Functioning: Empirical Support For Contrasting Models Of Risk And Vulnerability,” higher levels of depression and poorer academic performance are two main risk factors for adolescent mental health (Lucier-Greer, Mallory, et al. 1286). High expectations of adults would give teenagers great stress on their performance and the failure of achieving adults’ expectation would result in high-level depression. These two factors are very dangerous for teenagers to get mental health problems or even cause suicide. The primary source shows that adults need to change their…
