Once the Civil War was over, when Lee surrendered, Abraham Lincoln quickly issued the thirteenth amendment. Following Lincoln’s death, Johnson took office and issued the Reconstruction Act. The reconstructions main goal was to rebuild the south after the war had ended. Congress established the Freedmen’s Bureau in 1865, to provide services like education and jobs to freed slaves. Black codes were enacted by most Southern states, virtually reducing blacks to slave status once again.
The Klu Klux Klan was formed during the reconstruction to oppose any opportunity given to freed slaves, very often restoring to violence. Three more Reconstruction Acts were passed by Congress, extenuating
