Focus of the Theory
The skilled helper model outlines natural changes of the client and how the service provider needs to connect with the client.
It also focuses on the problem that is set future goals for solving the problem rather that dwelling on the past.
Nature of the individual
Due to sexual abuse the client has fear of relating with males, the client went through a traumatic experience which was perpetuated by a male, as a result the client feels uncomfortable around men because she thinks that all men will abuse her sexually.

This model is change oriented;
She wants to overcome her fear
She wants to have an intimate partner
She wants to interact with other people
She wants to be able to trust people
She wants to overcome feelings of shame, guilt and blame
She does not want to suffer from depression due to past experiences
The client needs to be helped by the skilled helper who has appropriate skills for counselling. The clients does not have to depend on the helper, they need to improve their problem solving skills and utilize available resources. Based on the theory, individuals are assisted on 3 main areas which are; what the current problems is, what they need and what they need to do to achieve their goals.
Goals of Intervention
To help the client identify the main problem which is child sexual abuse
To apply the skilled helper model so as to help the client manage problems that came about as a result of child sexual abuse and live positively
To help the client come up with possible alternatives to her problem
To help the client achieve her goals of living a normal life as she wishes
