How does your core text convey the concept of belonging through a connection to place?…
An individual’s experience of belonging is invariably affected by their previous encounters with their environment and the people with whom they interact. This is clearly presented within the texts analysed. In the novel “The Simple Gift” by Steven Herrick the author successfully demonstrates the power of past experiences to both limit and enrich an individual’s sense of belonging to both their surroundings and influential people. Similarly in the poem “Drifters”, Bruce Dawe conveys the idea of constant change preventing people connecting and belong to a community or place.…
The ultimate gift in the book, The Ultimate Gift, was all twelve of the lessons Jason learned throughout the twelves months. These lessons were to help Jason become a better person by learning the meaning of life. Therefore, each lesson was a life experience. Life is fragile and short and Red Stevens did not want Jason to keep living life without appreciation. Jason went into this journey as a greedy and selfish man. Before Jason begun all he cared about was inheriting money from his great-uncle, Red Stevens, but was going to leave without asking what he got for completing all the assigned lessons. Jason came out wanting to share his experience with others. In The Ultimate Gift Jason said, “I had no idea that the greatest gift anyone could…
The Simple Gift, a novel by Steven Herrick, is based on the journey of a teenage boy named Billy. The book highlights that material possessions are not all that matters, and that often it is a sense of belonging that really shines through during desperate times. Sometimes money even if earnt can be valueless, freedom can be found easier if you lack physical possessions, and simply letting go of the past and leaving it behind can lead to you finding happiness through better, stronger relationships.…
Chapter 6 is all based the strengthening of friendship between the characters of Caitlin and Bill and of Old bill and Billy. In the section Comfort Bill talks about how he hated school and didn’t have any friends. The repetition of the negative quotes in the section emphasises how Billy did not belong in his old environment. “I never talked to girls, I hardly talked to anyone. Sure, I answered questions from teachers and occasionally I’d talk to some guys I’d know for years. But I didn’t have any friends”. This links back to the harsh and abusive environment Billy grew up in, as stated in previous chapters.…
Thus, part of what Jason was saying came in bits and pieces. One thing I do remember him saying, however, was “baby steps.” This was one of his most common and confusing comments to me. For the most part when he says it, I feel as if he is using it as a teaching analogy, to help me “grow” or better myself, so that I can achieve greater successes. But every now and then, it appears that he is using it in a condescending manner, as if to imply that he has to take things easy on me, or make it simple.…
