Before Reading
What do you already know about the author/story?
I actually do not know anything about the author or story. I have not heard of either before.
Notice the title: does it give you any ideas about what the story may be about?
Based on the title, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”, I was not sure at first whether the story would be a bibliography of his life or fiction. However, what I gathered was that the story was going to be about an experience in Phoenix, Arizona.
Read the information about the author and the first paragraph of the story. Write down 3 to 5 questions that you already have.
1.) Will
the story be fiction or a biography?
2.) Will the story be based on similar experiences Sherman Alexie had or had seen or known from the reservation?
3.) Who is Victor?
Write a 3-5 sentence summary of the story.
Victor finds out his father had passed away in Phoenix, Arizona. However, because he has trouble financially getting to his father, his childhood friend, Thomas decides to help him make the trip. Although, Victor views Thomas as a strange storyteller, as the trip progresses we see their relationship as well as hidden secrets unfold.
Reflect: How did the story make you feel? Why? What did you learn? What was powerful?
At first, I was sad to read about the circumstances Victor was going through with his father having passed and trying to find his way to get to Arizona. However, as the story progressed I knew feelings would rekindle when Victor accepted his old friend, Thomas, who offers to go on the trip with him. Especially considering that Victor and his friends see Thomas as a strange storyteller. Also, as we read further we get to hear old stories the two shared as kids and by the end we learn that Thomas was following his feelings and fathers wishes to care for Victor. I thought this was a powerful moment because it goes to show that we shouldn’t judge a person based on what believe or who they are. Deep down there’s a secret behind them and as well as by Victors surprise, Thomas was the most caring and helpful one upon the circumstance.
