What Makes A Meteorologist?
Have you ever wondered how a meteorologist is able to predict the weather and give an accurate weekend forecast? According to Merriam Webster, a barometer is an instrument that is used to measure air pressure and predict changes in the weather. Meteorologists use many tools to aid in their weather forecast, but the barometer is a trusty tool that has been around for many years. Throughout this paper we will determine when and where the barometer was discovered, what it does, and how it affects us.
Evangelista Torricelli is not one of the top five inventors that the majority of people are familiar with, but he developed one of the most useful instruments in weather forecasting. The barometer was invented in the early seventeenth century

There is an instrument called a barometer that is used to measure atmospheric pressure. (Wile p. 59) Atmospheric pressure changes due to the changing weather patterns. A barometer is a tool that is useful for tracking and predicting the weather. This is useful for weathermen because it helps predict the weather for people. The barometer is a tube filled halfway up with some sort of liquid that rises or drops according to what the atmospheric pressure is. There are two kinds of barometers: The Torricellian and the Aneroid barometers. The Torricellian barometer is the simplest of all the barometers. The Torricellian barometer is a tall measuring cylinder that sits upside down in a container filled with mercury. The mercury rises in the cylinder when air pressure pushes down on the mercury. This is similar to a thermometer because the mercury in the thermometer rises and falls according to the temperature. When air pressure pushes down on the mercury in the container it will rise in the cylinder. The higher the air pressure the higher the mercury will rise in the cylinder. (Chris, Woodford) The cylinder will have marks to measure the mercury as it rises. We use mercury instead of water because water is less dense. Water being less dense than mercury the air pressure will make water rise up in the cylinder much higher than
