Herbert Clark Hoover was a President of the United States of America that faced many challenges as President. He was elected to office as a
Republican with what many believe to be a guaranteed win due to many splits with in the Democratic party. But after obtaining the Office he faced his first major hurdle as President when the stock market fell. Contrary to popular belief President Hoover was a good president because of his work as a geologist, miner, public service and his work as the Secretary of
Commerce gave him a wide range of background brought to the Office of
Presidency.
President Hoover was a very smart man, especially when it came to the planet we live on. He was an excellent miner for more than twenty years. He worked all over the world as a miner. zinc. He worked in various mines in Australia, China, and London over the twenty years. While in China, President Hoover and his wife Lou Henry were stuck there during the Boxer Rebellion.
After working as a miner, Hoover became a humanitarian. His first noted act was assisting more than 120,000 American tourists and businessmen from Europe at the start of World War I. During this time he also led five hundred volunteers as they passed out food and other necessary items to the needy. Next he headed a committee for relief in Belgium. This was called the Committee for Relief in Belgium. The Finns honored all of his dedicated work by adding the word Hoover to their language meaning "to help".
After World War I, President Wilson appointed Hoover as the head of an American Food Administration. His first success was cutting the ratio of food consumed needed overseas to food rationed at home. Hoover also organized food shipments to the starving people of Central Europe in the wake of the war. He also realized he was in a great position to collect valuable information on the Great War and its effects on the human race so he pledged $50,000 to the Stanford University and this started the "Hoover
War Collection. He also donated all of his information from the several relief agencies in which he had served during the war. This collection was later renamed as the "Hoover War Library".
Next Hoover worked as the Secretary of Commerce just before becoming President. While being the Secretary of Commerce he decided to keep himself busy by changing the department from having very little powers to seizing control of many other cabinets forming them as sub-departments and committees until it was said by many that Hoover was the "Secretary of Commerce and Under-Secretary of Everything Else!"
As Secretary and later as President, Hoover worked hard to unite the relationship between big business and government. He focused on eliminating waste and increasing efficiency in business and industry. He strived towards reducing labor losses from several areas including trade disputes, accidents and injuries. Hoover also held a "Own Your Own Home" campaign in which he worked with loan industry to promote a new long- term home mortgage, which stimulated home construction.
President Hoover won his election against Alfred E Smith. Alfred was a democrat, and this was one aspect the helped Hoover win. At this time the democratic party was undergoing many splits mainly due to religious beliefs. Hoover himself, was a Quaker and avoided many of the religious issues. The other major issue that helped Hoover win was Prohibition. In public he greatly supported this, and was even noted saying this was a "noble experiment". However, it was rumored that he himself enjoyed drinking.
During his term as president, Hoover tried many things to boost the economy after the stock market crash. He was against the federal government giving direct relief; however he pushed state and local governments to make up their own organization measures to ease the depression. He encouraged the major industries to promise to maintain wages, and even got Ford to increase wages from $6.00 to $7.00 a
day.
Some of the other things Hoover accomplished as president was he closed many loopholes in taxation that profited the rich. He also increased the number of veteran hospitals. He created a children's charter that advocated the protection of every child regardless of race or gender. He organized the federal bureau of prisons, and instituted prison reforms. Finally he began the construction of Boulder Dam, which was later renamed the Hoover Dam.
The quote by Hoover "Once upon a time my political opponents honored me as possessing the fabulous intellectual and economical power by which I created a worldwide depression all by myself" will tell you what most remember Hoover for. However, many of the policies set forth by Hoover are still in effect today.
Hoover was a good and effective president, he also was a good person whom faced many hardships as president of the united states of America. President Hoover was an engineer and a minor who worked all over the world. He also did a lot of non-profit humanitarian work during and after world war one. Finally his work as the secretary of commerce is unparallel . One must remember the united states did not elect someone who was not a great man, he was simply plagued by the fall of the stock market in his first year as president.
