In the play “What of the Night?”, I found the character Rainbow and Ray most compelling. The character Rainbow was played by Mo Rodvanich. Rainbow grew up poor somewhere in the Southwest, and finally made it to an Eastern city when she grew older in 1958. In scene two, she met her lover who was sick and required medicine to get better. Being poor that she was, Rainbow had to steal to afford the price of the medicine. Rainbow risked being caught and proceeded to steal a watch from a man despite her lover condemned the action. Ray was played by Kyle Hester. Ray was portrayed as a rich businessman who was succeeding in his work but lost it all at the very end. The set of Ray’s scenes was designed with big city living space with fancy studying table, couch, and bed with lamps attached to it. In the play, Ray risked his relationship with Helena for his work. While he was successful in his work, Ray took Helena’s love for granted. Kyle really showed how ignorant he was to Helena by not looking at her when speaking to her and being rude and angry to convey how much he loathed her presence. Ray’s personal objective was to abandon her annoying wife so that he could focus on his work. However, after Ray failed his business and became homeless on the street, he began to realize what was meaningful to him. At the end of the scene, Kyle used a very desperate and regretful voice to shout how much he missed Helena’s company. To me, the way he cried and wail for Helena really made me understand how much Ray wishes Helena to come back to him. I found the actor to be genuine that he could deliver his emotion to the audience. I also found his performance to be imaginative from the transition of his outfits. When Ray was still successful in his work, he was wearing an expensive suit with matching blazer. However, when he switched to baggy and stained clothes and an over-sized sweater, I could tell that his life has tanked and he is suffering. Overall, I found the play
