out the Ottomans. The victory there and later a victory against the Bulgarians invited a sense of nationalism to the Balkans that later gave a reason for the start of World War I. One country that had a large increase in the feeling of nationalism was Serbia. In the next century, Serbia had several nationalistic groups form, which wanted all foreign rule out of their country. This later created a major cause of World War I when the Black Hand, a nationalist group, shot the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, causing a huge uproar and eventually causing World war I. Another cause of World War I was the entangling alliances. This is considered a cause of World War I because most countries had, at least, two alliances. This can easily become a problem if two countries start a war and are both allied with the same country and are asking for support. Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany to protect themselves from Russia, then Austria-Hungary made an alliance with Serbia so that Russia wouldn’t take possession of Serbia. Next, Austria-Hungary and Germany added Italy, creating the Triple Alliance, Austria-Hungary and Germany did this just to keep Italy from joining forces with Russia. This made Russia rethink her assets, so Russia made an alliance with France to protect herself from Germany and Austria-Hungary. After that, France, and Britain made an agreement, not an alliance, to watch each others back, then Britain and Russia made a similar agreement. Then, the three of them, Russia, Britain, and France formed the Triple Entente to counter Germany who was slowly becoming a bigger threat. The Triple Entente then added to the chaos by agreeing not to sign any peace treaties, or any other document involving the signing for peace, without the consent of the other two.
One last example of a cause of World War I is militarism, militarism is when a government believes that their army or military needs to be better than anyone else's.
Right before World War I a big part of Europe was going through a phase where no one wanted to be behind in the military standards, each country wanted to be the best. Germany started it by improving their navy because they were afraid Britain was going to try to attack. A lot of the countries in Europe were competing to see which could make the best new weapon, and things were getting really tense. Especially since Germany was doing so well, and had made an alliance with Austria-Hungary.
There were many causes for World War I including the reasons above, though there are many more as well. World War I was a huge war which means it had huge reactions and a huge buildup. When something affects the whole world it is always well remembered. World War I is well remembered and will continue to be so for a long
time.
