What Was The Cold War?

Cold War Essay What do you think the Cold War is/was? Was it a war between communism and democracy? Well the Cold War was a war between the United States and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism while the United States wanted to spread democracy. The Cold War was called Cold because there was not direct fighting between the two countries the Soviet Union and the United States. The two countries only fought proxy wars against each other, the definition for a proxy war is, “a war between two countries in which the countries do not fight directly, but through other countries.” The Cold War started in 1947 and ended in 1991. World organizations were created at this time. One organization that was for communism was the Warsaw Pact, the Warsaw Pact acted like one big military. Another organization that was for democracy was NATO. NATO was like an alliance, if one country got attacked the other countries in the alliance would help the country that got attacked. Stalin created the Soviet bloc and life in the Soviet Bloc was difficult. The countries not agreeing with each other and growing tensions between the countries eventually brought about the Cold war, the United States and the Soviet Union fought several proxy wars that were parts of the Cold War. Two very important proxy wars I think are the Korean War and the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis was also very important because it was the closest the two countries came to nuclear
After WW2 Korea was divided at the 38th parallel and was later governed by the United Nations, the United Nations tried to create a plan to reunite them. The North Koreans wanted communism, and the South wanted a democracy. Fighting began in June, 1950 when Soviet-made tanks from North Korea rolled across the border of South Korea. President Truman then asked the United Nations to stop the war from getting bigger and the United Nations was able to push the North Koreans back. Then the Chinese sent in their troops to help the North Koreans. The war went on for 3 years, more than 54,000 Americans were killed and 103,000 wounded. There were also other proxy wars like the Suez Crisis and the Cold War that was in Latin America.
