The Bolshevik victory in the civil war was down to a number of factors. The first being the role of Trotsky, the geographical advantages the Red Army had and the weaknesses of the White Army. Undoubtedly, the most significant was the geographical advantages of the Red Army because this was what secured the equipment to fight and allowed it to be transported.
The Bolsheviks had control over a large part of Russia which was key as it was the industrial and most densely populated part of the country, Moscow and Petrograd. Effectively this meant that they had control of around seventy million people which was huge in comparison to the White Army's mere twenty million. Evidently this is incredibly significant as both armies relied on compulsory military services in order to raise arms and make munitions. It could however, be argued that it wasn't the amount of people that they had under control but what exactly they did with the people. A huge amount of terror was inflicted into them as the Bolsheviks introduced War Communism which was when they conscripted people to work in factories to make weapons through the use of coercive tactics such as the fear of inprisonment. Therefore the most significant factor is not the geographical advantages but instead the tactics of the Bolshevik party. This can easily be rebuked by stating that most significant factor was in fact the geographical advantages as it was the power over so many people that allowed the Bolsheviks to maximise their output of weapons thus have better equipt soldiers which would ultimately lead to the demise of their opponent.
The Russian railway network was also controlled by the Bolsheviks which proved to become key in winning the civil war. They used the railways to distribute munitions and transport soldiers to different fronts. What was so significant about this was the advantage of speed this gave to the Red Army. If
