When I Was Working At N. Y. P. Q.
When I was working at N.Y.P.Q., I was always occasionally criticized because it was my first time ever volunteering and I did not have anyone to guide me through. Once, on the third floor of the North side, I was asked to change the size of a respiratory mechanism. I followed her instructions and found myself in mother and baby department (that’s what I identify the floor as) and I asked the clerk for a different size. She yelled at me for coming here and wasting her time because no one notified her that I was coming down for the mechanism. I did not yell back and excused myself because I made the wrong turn. It was my mistake and I apologized for wasting her time. I found myself in the correct department and got the correct size. I learned from my mistake and made sure that I know where every department is in the …show more content…
I knew where it was located and when I had gotten there, I did not know who to ask for my administrative task. I went to a woman who was busy typing and talking on the phone. I waited for her to hang up so I will not be disturbing her during her conversation and when she did, I introduced myself to her. She was Rosemary, she working in the human resources department as the secretary for Suzan who was the head of the department. She advised me to file a few document in alphabetical order. These confidential documents had employee information. As I was done I showed it to Rosemary and she told me how I had made it more difficult for myself because I was supposed to file under their last names, some had two last names and instead of asking her for help I continued with filing them under their second last name. She told me how if I had asked she could have told me that they actually used their first last name to file them. I felt horrible because I made her disappointed because if I did not finish filing these paper it would be her doing it and it made her job much more difficult. I took her criticism and

I remembered the moment when I was faced with a dire situation, when I was assistant coaching our local Jr. High Football team. The game was Lowell v.s Gilchrist. It was early in the 3rd quarter when we witnessed one of the players falling without getting hit. The coaches on the other team scrabbled to aid the young athlete, yet they didn’t understand was wrong. I came over to assistant, yet was pushed away, probably because I was only 16 and didn’t look like I could really help. Then I noticed the 6th grader twitching and realized that he was in anaphylactic shock. That’s when I suddenly asserted my place and started barking out orders. Within moments I was in charge and I took over on the care of the child. A woman that came over (I assumed…

When I started my first job in an eye clinic, I was hired to work the front desk of the main office along with three other ladies. I was the youngest at 22 , one gal was about 5 years older than myself, and the other two were in their early 60's. One of the older ladies had worked there a significant amount of time while the other two and myself were hired at the same time. There was an initial friction between one of the older ladies and my younger co-worker and myself. We thought she was bossy and tried to micro-manage us even though she was not in a supervisory position. She also would try and tell us how the older patients liked to be spoken to. After a while, management stepped in to try and mediate the conflict. As it turned out, my bossy co-worker was simply taught her work ethic and interpersonal skills in a different era. She felt more senior than my co-worker and I because she was older, with more life experience. She also thought that being from an older generation herself, that she knew how to communicate better with our patients. We were all trying to help our patients, do our jobs well, and effectively communicate, but our different backgrounds and significant difference in age, were creating an interpersonal conflict.…

When I was a young nurse it seemed like problems I saw were continually put on a back burner or not treated fairly. It’s important to be accountable for mistakes. I have worked on a surgical floor for 16 years. On occasion we will be pulled to another unit if they are really short. I was pulled to an oncology floor when I had been an RN for about 3 years. I was not familiar with the chemo drugs and their schedules. But my med sheet had times listed when to hang certain things so I didn’t ask the charge nurse but went about hanging my drugs. Later in the day the oncologist saw what happened and threw a huge fit. I wasn’t told specifically what I’d done wrong but just that I was incompetant and he didn’t want me ever taking care of his patients again. That was hard to hear because most of the time I was told I was great to be around and a great asset to my unit. I asked the charge nurse what I done wrong. She said certain things weren’t compatible and that I had put the patient at risk but she also told me not to worry, she wouldn’t “report” me. She just kept poo pooing me and told me she would take care of things. It literally seemed like everything was just swept under a rug. Later after my shift was over I went back down to my floor and talked with my clinical educator about what happened. She used to work oncology so I knew she would understand that units procedures. She was upset that I was assigned a chemo patient to…

    * The situation I have chosen to talk about is something that happened to me. It was work related, my first job actually. I got it through a program that is offered to people who are 18 and just graduated, it was to teach you how to keep a job, what to do at interviews etc. You got paid as you would if it was a real job. You got to decide on what field you would work at. I of course wanted to go to school that deals with psychology or social worker even something in the medical field. It took a while for the main women in charge of everything to find a location for me to work at. I worked at her office until she did. I would file papers, answer phones, One day in particularly I wore a vintage looking top, and the lady told me not to wear it again (although it covered me and was something someone would wear when going to meetings.) After that she would start to be a little mean towards me I was 3 mins late, although I was at the office before she was and couldn’t get in until she was there to unlock it. After a few weeks working there, she finally found me a place, I was then working at the records department, and it was great my supervisor was amazing. Now this is where the issues start to come in, since I was with a program that’s how I got paid not by the actual place, I…

As a resource, Ms. Pancake had proposed to micro manage my efforts to ensure the conceptual understanding of my responsibilities and I agreed. We had arranged to do so on Wednesday, December 7 as it would be less strenuous on her time schedule. This was to give her the opportunity to complete her required closing processes, while demonstrating to them that I was competent with my allotted tasks by completing them in the time requested. She and Mr. Rackers had accepted my proposal. As the day came, she was resolving an issue from the previous accounting week, and was speaking with Mr. Whittaker about invoicing. After speaking with him, she had walked back to office, but stopped by my cubicle to check my progress. The conversation went…

True event: When I was a younger man back in 1973 or 74, I was out in (Royal Oak) near the (Detroit Zoo). I cannot remember the reason I went out there more than likely just joy riding, I use to do a lot of that when I was younger since the age of 18, and mostly I have driven new cars all my adult life. I saw a sign for a delicatessen that offered corn beef sandwiches among others; so I stopped, and went in to buy a sandwich. When I entered there were people already in line placing and receiving their orders and more people came in after me; you did not need to have a number for your turn to place an order. The order taker or waitress a (white female), was doing a good job of calling the correct person for their orders until my turn was up. When my turn came the order taker asked someone for their order that I felt entered after I did, but I saw not sure. Anyway after this person made their order (MY turn), wrong; she asked someone else could she help them, but what she did not know was that me and this person had short small talk while waiting our turn. Instead of stepping up to place an order, this person said; I think gentlemen is suppose next, the order taker said (oh sorry), and asked me (what do you want)! I looked at her and said not a thing from this place, and turned and walked out. As I left I could hear a few people telling her about manners and he was just another customer regardless. Oh did I mention that I was the only person of color in the delicatessen. I was not embarrassed, but angry as a (**********).…

After spending one month in the female medical ward it was finally time to rotate to another ward. I was placed in the female surgical ward which barely had patients and was extremely quiet that day. The objective for that week was health assessment and physical examination so, therefore, I had to do a head to toe assessment on one of the patients under the supervision of a registered nurse. My patient was a forty-year-old woman who had a foot fungal infection called tinea pedis which caused her feet to swell, therefore she was unable to walk. Before I began the head to toe assessment on my patient I provided privacy, inspected her while I introduced myself and informed her what I am about to do.…

A lot of effort was required to do my volunteer work. The clinic is very busy so I always have to be on my feet. I volunteered from 8AM-5PM, Monday through Friday. The mornings mainly consisted of filing away the therapist’s notes into the patient’s files. After the filing was done, I would “shadow” behind the therapists and assist them with various tasks. I retrieved hot and cold packs for patients by retrieving them out of the clinic’s back room and putting them on the patient’s injuries, then returning the packs once the timers went off. I cleaned the beds once the patients were finished with treatment by spraying them with a disinfecting cleaner and wiping them down to keep the area hygienic. I showed patients how to perform their basic exercises to improve better ranges of motion for whatever condition they had by doing it with them. For example,…

New York has become so expensive that many city residents have been forced to relocate. Everything in New York is just a little bit harder than everywhere else. Most people tend to think that those who move into NYC replacing those who depart tend to earn less money. But, according to The U.S. Census Bureau Between April 2010 and July 2016, 846,669 more people moved out of New York state than moved in. That's the largest outflow in the country.…
