When Technology Meets Human’s Emotion, Technology Fail

Haw happy is the blameless vestal's lot? The world forgetting by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Each prayer accepted and each wish resigned. --Alexander Pope The name of the film comes from an 18th century poet Alexander Pope's poem Eloisa Abelard. When I first saw the film, I did not find any connection between the poem and the film. After I thought in-deptht, I found the film is a reflection of the poem. There is a kind of eternal sunshine in people's pure mind, it won't be gone with memory. That is the sunshine of love. In the film, even though people erased the memories of their ex-partners, they always fall in love with each other again and again. The time in love is always beautiful, but dispute, misunderstanding and pain also exist in every relationship. Some relationships eventually break, and both parts want to erase the bad memory with him/her. However, happiness and desperation go together forever, if we want to forget something bad, the happiness will go, as well. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind tells a story about erasing memory. It is different from some old ordinary films. The director made the film jump around in time to draw a picture of many different scenes in memory. Every scene is just like a jigsaw. The director used a unique way to put the jigsaw together, and let the audience and the hero find the last piece. In the end, we linked every jigsaw piece, or every scene together, and our heart got hit. The film begins with a strange action of the hero Joel: Joel decided not to take the same train to the same place, as everyday did. He ran to another train out to Montauk. He even did not understand why he wanted to do that as he did not think he was an impulsive person Actually, Joel and his ex-girlfriend Clementine had just erased their memories, in order to forget the pain of being together.

Born to Allan and Maria Gansevoort Melvill, on August 1, 1819, Herman Melville was the third of eight children who grew up in New York. By the mid- 1830s, Melville had already started writing, but unfortunately, his family had financial problems, and he had to take a job as a cabin boy on a merchant ship that set sail in June 1839. In January of 1841, he sailed again on a whaler named Acushnet and embarked on an excursion to the South Seas; and later the same year he enrolled on an Australian whaler, Lucy Ann, which anchored Tahiti. These two locations are where he found his inspiration for his first novel, Typee (1846), and his second novel Omoo (1847), which both describe Melville’s somewhat romanticized version of his experiences on these islands. Over the next decade, Melville wrote seven more novels…

Time will inevitably affects the way we view the world around us. As time moves on so to does ones opinions and views on the world around. Transitioning through age also affects our view on reality. In Alison Gopnik’s “Possible Worlds: Why Do Children Pretend?” she shows us the difference between how children and adults perceive things. At the same time in Sherry Turkle’s “Alone Together” we are shown how growing technology affects are views on reality. When one combines the ideas of both Turkle and Gopnik, they see a correlation between technology’s growing influence and the rate at which your view of reality changes.…

In our humanity, violence is a great flaw. Violence is the reason why we humans caused suffering to this planet and to each other. Greed, revenge and envy are 3 of the 7 deadly sins that are most of the time expressed through violence. But at the very beginning of the sins, we started it through our anger that we cannot control. For example: revenge is caused by anger, envy is jealousy and greed can be caused by fear. Fear is an emotion that is used as basic survival mechanism, but has also proven that it can lead to an act of violence. The Bet by Anton Chekhov, the Hobbyist by Fredric Brown and Lock and Key by Rush have shown great example that emotional human behavior is one the greatest flaw of humanity.…

Turkle’s use of personal experiences and testimonies not only serve as ethical and logical appeals, but also as emotional appeals. For example, Turkle explains that a high school sophomore once confided in her that “he wishes he could talk to an artificial intelligence program instead of his dad about dating...” (138). This immediately evokes sympathy from the audience because it touches on family relationships and the vulnerability of teenagers, both of which are extremely sensitive subjects This appeal to emotion reinforces Turkle’s claim that technology is beginning to replace relationships and encourages the audience to lean towards her views. Yet another compelling appeal to emotion is Turkle’s recount of “one of her most haunting experiences”. She elaborates that she witnessed an elderly woman talk to a robotic baby seal about the loss of her child and the woman appeared to be comforted by the machine (138). She appeals to the audience’s sense of compassion for the elderly, as well as sympathy and sadness for the loss of a child. By manifesting these emotions, Turkle sets up the perfect catalyst for her claim that machines are replacing relationships between people. Likewise, Turkle elicits guilt from her audience by criticizing that “we have little motivation to say something truly self-reflective” (137) and “we flee from solitude, our ability to be…

This can be seen as time being an obstacle for the two as it is a common situation that happens to couples,"the right love at the wrong time". Throughout the film it is also depicted that the woman brings life to the man, as she is able to bring him to life, birds to life and ants to life, literally and metaphorically the woman and or her love is able to bring the man to life. The two go through more obstacles that keep them from being together, but the final one is where the man thinks he has finally reached his beloved. The man is holding a heart that turns into the shape of the woman but the heart then continues changing into her dress, the man is saddened. The man was not able to reach his love and returns to his statue state, but there is a new hole where his heart is supposed to be. The camera zooms in on his hole and the bell, which is actually the woman is seen filling up the hole found in the man's heart. The film then ends with that scene, which can be interpreted as him holding her dear to his heart.
