Whitman Interview
Good morning Lindsey,

Thanks for meeting with me yesterday! I wanted to take some time to review our meeting as a "lessons learned" effort. Please note upfront that I decline to work for Whitman Associates so please make my file "InActive" effective immediately.

Nevertheless, I'd like to provide you some feedback from our meeting as it was a great experience for me to assess my interviewing skills and in turn provide you with feedback on your professionalism.

Our interview, although at times painfully uncomfortable was a great opportunity for me to assess my interviewing skills I move forward. Our interaction also provided me with a deeper insight into social- racial relationships, perceptions, and attitudes which must not be overlooked or undervalued. There were times when I felt "interrogated' rather than interviewed with repeated questions starting at the top of the list only to be repeated 2

Instead of the frustration and snide remarks you exhibited in our interview, a more professional approach could have been displayed where you provided a genuine analysis of what I could or should improve upon - honest communication between person to person, human resources professional to employment candidate. (not based on race, age, or social economic discrimination or personal bias). Whether you or your company 'uses' or hires the job seeker or no, human resources involves performance management and training! And a genuine interest in people on a customer service level.

Although, I may not be the best speaker I take mental notes of conversations, including attitudes, energies, body language, etc to analyze and ALWAYS see ways to 'improve' upon existing realities. So for this ‘experience’, I am grateful and thank you.

Respectfully,

Daria Smith

Research on interviews has generally shown that standardized procedures are higher in their reliability and validity than unstructured interviews. Learning how structured interviews are constructed is an important component of the selection process, as is getting a “feel” for what it’s like to give and receive an interview. This case gives you an opportunity to do both.…

For my interview I choose to speak to Jaquetta Harris, executive director of the leasing department at the Rochester Housing Authority (RHA). Having been employed with RHA for less than one year, Mrs. Harris has had to overcome many obstacles accompanied with being new to the organization and also being an African American female leader. Being both African American and a female, has in the past caused much heart ache for many aspiring African American women. However, Mrs. Harris has had years of experience leading from various other jobs; the most recent being an executive director with the Volunteers of America organization.…

Going in to this interview, I was not certain what to expect at all. I had prepared a few questions and anticipated it lasting maybe ten to fifteen minutes at the most. However, my mental image of the interview did not remotely match up to what actually occurred. My interviewee was Dr. Hal B. Woodall, a medical doctor who owns Kenly Medical Associates, his private practice, but also comes in to the Wilson Medical Center to closely follow along with his patients, although he is not employed by, paid, or charged by the hospital for his services there. He has owned this practice and followed this routine for the past 38 years, ever since he completed his residency and internship at what is now known as Virginia Commonwealth University’s medical center. He attended the University of…

Throughout the story, At the Pitt-Rivers, the narrator analyses a “couple” in the museum. He observes the way the couple act around each other and how they communicate. When the narrator first spots the young woman, he observes her and her physical appearance: “The girl was definitely not attractive … she hadn’t got a nice figure; her legs were kind of dumpy and she didn’t have pretty hair or anything like that” (Lively 24). Right off the bat, the narrator judges the woman for not being attractive whatsoever. However, the narrator goes on for being misconstrued: “She still wasn’t pretty, but she had the most beautiful expression I’ve ever seen in my life” (Lively 25). The narrator is stating how, even though this woman may be unattractive, she has the most beautiful expression ever. Later on, the narrator realizes that the reason why she lights up so much and gives off this beautiful array of expression, is because of the man she is with. At this point, the narrator recognizes that the man may be in a relationship with the woman and eventually concludes that they are.…

The individual being interviewed is my friend, Shelley. Shelley is a dynamic, Jewish woman who was born and raised in the Washington Heights section of New York City. My first interview was conducted on an African American woman. She is 75 years old and is originally from Saint Joseph, Louisiana. However, she is a widower and all of her children have passed on. She moved here to Houston Texas in 1960 with the husband and two children. Where they have resided in the area of Houston known as Fifth Ward for over 54 years. She has spoken about how growing up in Louisiana as a black child was horrible, and how they were taught to avoid the police by all means. The town of Saint Joseph was a very small town, and it was divided by color. Yes my interviewee grew up during segregation, and she recalls that the police were not for the blacks. She recalls classmates being beaten by the police and nothing never being done about the fact that they were beaten for nothing.…

My first question to him was, “Have you seen racism in our school? And his response was, “No i have never seen racism in this school or any school I worked at, but I have seen a lot of racism growing up and my school”. I agree with that because I have heard many stories from my parents and grandparents about how their use to be a black school only and a white school only. No blacks or whites were allowed to be seen together. This led to my next question, “How often was the situation”, as he responded, “No it was never often, it was more of an isolation problem”. This led to my next question about the Oklahoma chant, “What’s your opinion on the chant from the student at Oklahoma Unsurvey?” with his response “ It was very tacky on the behavior of the frat house, and the student was wrong for what he said, but the present and school board handled the problem very well. Which I think we all can agree that the present handle it well, as I began to end my interview with my last question, “ How do you think we can change the view on racism as we get older and time change?” How do you think we can change the view on racism as we get older and time change?” And he responded, “ we would never be able to change generation of racism until we get them to understand the true meaning of racism we would never be able to change generation of racism until we hit it so we get them to understand the true meaning of racism, remember the Titans is a great movie that explains racism because it explains how you can take two races and come together, remember the titans is a great example of racism because it explains how two races come together and create a powerful football team even though the town didn't like it”, but there are many ways we can prevent racism from happening.…
